Today we honor and remember Jimmy Cox, a valued member of the PSGSL community.

Jimmy was known for his kindness, his humor, and the warmth he brought to those around him. He played in our league, and many also knew him from his time behind the bar at the Tool Shed, where his friendly spirit left a lasting impression on so many.

Jimmy will be remembered as someone who brought heart, laughter, and genuine connection to our community. We send our condolences to all who knew him.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of William “Wh**ey” Whitehurst.

Wh**ey’s love for softball and his impact on the community reached far beyond one field or one league. A respected figure in Long Beach softball, he was honored as a member of the Surf and Sun Softball League Hall of Fame and was inducted into the (International Pride Softball) NAGAAA Hall of Fame in 2012. He was known not only for his dedication to the game, but for his wisdom of the game, which he shared generously with others.

Wh**ey was also active in the Palm Springs Gay Softball League, where he helped with coaching and keeping books, always willing to support the game and the people in it. He served as Commissioner of the Surf and Sun Softball League and was deeply passionate about building bridges through the sport, including coaching championship women’s softball teams in Long Beach.

His kindness, knowledge, leadership, and love of softball left a lasting mark on the community.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, to the Surf & Sun Softball League, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory live on through the many lives he touched and the softball community he helped strengthen.

More info: Players from all divisions will be drafted onto brand-new teams based on skill ratings—so you’ll be matched fairly and get the chance to play with teammates you don’t usually line up with. It’s competitive, community-building, and most of all, a blast!
