How and Why I Opened Jade Bicycle Repair

June 1, 2020

About 3 years ago, I was invited to be a part of the Cannondale Bike Tech team for AIDS Lifecycle. It was a frightening beginning knowing I’d be working alongside experienced wrenches but I took it on and they were amazing. That led me to volunteer for Best Buddies rides and return to ALC Cannondale Bike Tech the following year. Then last sum

mer in 2019, I decided to go to Barnett Bicycle Institute to get some formal training so I could be better at fixing bikes because I really enjoyed doing it,

When Covid-19 hit, my income went to zero and so here I am. I assessed where I was in life and what made me happy as a semi-retired guy and this made a lot of sense to me. I had the tools, the training and the love for fixing bikes. So I hope one day I can clean and adjust your bike too. Can’t wait to meet you and your bike!!

Update on my journey to become a Mobile Bike Shop!

After obtaining the van, we gutted it last week — and today the build-out begins! I've readied the website, finalized the business plan, set up what I think are fair rates, and updated my insurances.

I had to purchase a new, slightly smaller workbench for inside, bought a canopy for outdoor work, and I'm assembling all the pieces to make it come together. Talk about a jigsaw puzzle!

Yesterday I did a test setup to see how long it would take — and it goes fast. In the meantime, I'm still open for appointments!

I also ran a GoFundMe to help with the mounting costs, and I can say the community has been incredibly generous. I appreciate and love all of you.

By doing this, you're helping preserve something bigger: this business is meant to become a legacy I can donate to the nonprofit I'm setting up to launch this fall. As time goes by, it will become theirs — helping keep bikes on the road for people who need them most.

Time to let the proverbial cat out of the bag. I'm going mobile in June. The plan is to turn this cream puff into a mobile bike shop. The new name of the business will be Jade Mobile Bicycle Repair. I'll be showing up at various venues and events, I may still be found at my current location at 555 N Commercial Rd, and I'll make house calls.

The service menu will change slightly but will be focusing on keeping your bike rolling by performing general maintenance tasks, flat repairs and replacing worn parts. My goal will be to keep rideable bikes on the road.

My business model won't change. Labor is still my business. Parts are a pass-through charge at what I actually pay plus shipping. My labor and tune-up rates will still run below the brick and mortar shops.

Appointments still preferred but now with a 1-2 hour window.

What I cannot do:

Being a mobile service, I'll be set up to do repairs that can be done efficiently in the field — not full rebuilds or major overhauls. Bikes with major neglect are beyond what mobile service can handle.

My service area will be mostly Palm Springs and Cathedral City. House calls will have a trip charge of $25.00. Out-of-area calls priced accordingly.

To book an appointment once I'm fully mobile, send me a DM or call 760-660-0010.

In the interim I'm still at 555 N Commercial Rd Unit 7, just off Alejo and Farrell.

Sound good? Let me know what you think!

Prices on everyday parts are up 50%. Buying off brand non-OEM is sometimes not advisable and buying Shimano from Amazon or eBay is questionable at best.

Tariffs hurt and yes, WE pay them, not the exporter. Facts matter.
