Hike to the Palm Desert Cross

Hike to the Palm Desert Cross Everybody loves to hike to the Palm Desert Cross. But there wasn't a way to "check in" when you got there. Now there is. Post your pics here! BRE #01318944.

The light from the Palm Desert Cross shines brighly above the city, and thanks to the development of hiking trails, is a brief but slightly strenous hike from the valley floor. But the view from the trail is spectacular and well worth the effort! The quickest way to the cross is to take Thrush Road from Hwy 74 in So. Palm Desert west, across the flood control channel and then north 1/4 mile to the

parking areas. (Enter 72500 Thrush Road in your GPS.) You are now in Homme Park, which the City of Palm Desert calls a park but is really just open desert with a picnic table or two. The trailhead is clearly marked and just to the west of where you park your car. We don't recommend the hike in the heat of summer; you can get in trouble very quickly in the 100+ temperatures. But it's a great hike in the cool seasons....take bottled water with you whenever you go and wear cool, comfortable clothes. Don't forget your camera and cell phone and sunscreen is a must. The trail to the cross is called the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, named after a famous singing cowboy of the 1950s who had a home in Palm Desert. There is a palapa along the way with a drinking fountain and a water bowl for your dog too! Top off your water bottle there, just to make sure. Please post your pics taken at the top and along the way, and we'll rotate the photos at the top of the page! We'd love to see photos with unique lighting, night photos and other cool photos you come up with. This page was created and is maintained by Bill Clawson of Coldwell Banker Realty in Palm Desert. (The law says I now have to give you my California Real Estate License number). There, I've done it). Other than that I will never run an ad or push you to list or sell your house with me on this page. Have fun and be safe up there!

Awesome view from the cross this Saturday!

Stone Eagle Golf Club, on Highway 74 in south Palm Desert, will be conducting a 10-minute fireworks display on Saturday, November 8, starting at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Staff from the Riverside County Office of the Fire Marshal will be on hand at the event.

Fireworks displays can disturb pets and be stressful to individuals with noise sensitivity. The City of Palm Desert encourages residents who live in affected areas to secure their pets in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area during the display.

Happy Holidays to Everyone! It's a great time of year to Hike to the Palm Desert Cross. Even though the weather is cool, you'll still need to bring plenty of water and a bright light if it's getting dark. Have fun and be safe!

Be careful with your dogs while on your hike. Two days ago a lady reported on "Nextdoor" that her dog nibbled something on the way up the hill to the cross that contained THC, the active ingredient in ma*****na. The dog became quite ill and was rushed to the vet, but has since recovered. Just a word of warning!

For the last week, the cross has been dark because of a major electrical short at the top of the cross. The estimated cost for repairs is $4,200 and about $3,000 has been raised so far by St. Margaret's Church, which owns the cross. Because the short is at the top of the cross, it has to be lowered to be repaired, which is where most of the expense comes in. If you love the cross and would like to contribute, please contact the office of St. Margaret's Church at 760-346-2697 during regular business hours.

Let's be careful up there! It's not just the heat we need to worry about. Be safe!

The “hiker down” call was received shortly after 11 a.m. in a hard- to-reach area on the Bump & Grind Trail

Unfortunately, a car was broken into (window smashed) Sunday morning while the occupants were hiking to the cross. It was parked where everybody else parks, at the north end of the road by the Homestead Trailhead. Please make sure you don't leave anything valuable visible in your car...even in broad daylight!
