Hello, I am Tanya Orozco, swim instructor and owner / operator of Desert Swim Academy, the home of desert fish. I love water and have been swimming all my life; at home, as a member of the Palm Springs High School swim team for four years, and as a water polo player for two years. I have been a certified swim instructor for eight years, and have also coached the Palm Desert High School Boys JV swi

m team. I have taught over 300 kids how to swim. I currently hold American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding/First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Water Safety and the Fundamentals of Instructor Training. The single most important thing I have learned over the years is that, for safety's sake, every child should have at least a basic knowledge of swimming.

For over 22 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping children and adults gain confidence in the water, overcome fears, and learn skills that could one day save their lives.

Every swimmer’s journey is different. Some need encouragement, some need patience, and some simply need someone who believes in them before they believe in themselves.

Watching a student accomplish something they once thought was impossible never gets old.

Parents, I know we always want to protect our children, especially when they’re afraid. But sometimes, those fears need to be faced so they can grow, gain confidence, and learn one of the most important life-saving skills, how to swim.

This boy conquered his fears and learned how to swim in just a few weeks through our training program. Watching children discover what they’re capable of is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Fear doesn’t have to be the end of the story, it can be the beginning of confidence. 💙🏊‍♂️

Some lessons are about swimming, and some are about something much bigger.

I watched a father guide his son through the water with patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief. As a coach, I can teach technique and build confidence, but moments like these remind me that the greatest lessons come from the people who love us most.

Years from now, he may not remember every drill or every lap, but he’ll remember his dad being right there beside him, cheering him on, helping him be brave, and celebrating every small victory.

These are the moments that turn into memories. 💙💦

This is what makes our program so amazing! Not only are we teaching water safety and swimming skills, but we also introduced this little boy to some fun water polo skills today. Building confidence, coordination, and a love for the water all in one lesson!
