For most of my life, I believed that Christmas was the greatest of holidays, celebrating the birth of Jesus. However, as I have grown spiritually, and have studied The Bible more deeply, I now know that Easter is the greatest of holidays, celebrating God's gift of eternal life through the resurrection of Jesus. As you celebrate Easter with your family, remember John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

We took the grandsons to Secret Lake Park. Cohen caught his first fish, a bluegill, but didn't want to touch it. He was interested in eating the bait (not worms, but bread 🤣🤣). Bennett caught his second fish, another bluegill. He was happy! Several birds flew in to grab some leftover bread. After fishing, the boys enjoyed playing on the playground equipment, then ate lunch at Dairy Queen.

Trip Date: 7/7/25

I took the boat over to Fort Maitland Park to get on the water and conduct some systems checks with the motor, the trolling motor, the Power Pole, the bilge pump, and the electronics. After completing all the checks, it was time to do some fishing.

This bass broke some records this year! Not only was he the smallest fish I caught this year, but he was also the largest fish I caught this year! This feisty little guy hit the plug as soon as it hit the water. He tugged a little as he was being reeled in, and gave a fight worthy of his size. Once I took his picture, I returned him to the water, and he swam away to go and wait for his next predatory strike.

The view going through the canals between the lakes is very peaceful and relaxing. The giant frog, the elephant, and the large faucet waterfall were a sight to see. The water and the wind were both calm, but after several hours, the sun started to get hot, so it was time to load and head for home.

I started my teaching career in 1984. Never back then did I imagine that 39 years later I would be taking one of my first students and her family on a boat cruise. Today I had the fortunate opportunity to do just that!

Stephanie and her children, Spencer and Cadence, were my guests this morning. We took a tour on the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, starting at Fort Maitland Park, which was recently reconstructed and is very nice.

We had such a great time, telling old stories and remembering fun times from years ago. Stephanie’s children were so much fun to be with, and we never had a lapse in conversation. They were so interesting and shared stories with me about their travels and interests. I was able to share some stories about their Mom and their family. My wife taught Stephanie’s brother in two different grade levels. We know he would have enjoyed being there!

We took our time and cruised by Rollins College, which you can spot behind them in the background in one of the pictures. Stephanie graduated from Rollins. I remember being invited to attend her graduation, and was glad I could be there to help her celebrate. She got excited when she saw Dinky Dock, and indicated they used to swim there frequently!

During our ride, we were able to get fairly close to the huge mansion that is still under construction, and they took pictures of the building, as well as the bronze elephant in the backyard of the mansion.

We also rode by a cypress tree out in one of the lakes that was decorated for Christmas!

We had such a great time together today! It was so nice to reconnect, and I am looking forward to being able to take them back out in the boat in the future and showing them the waterways in Palm Coast.

Mark has wanted to get out on the water for a boat ride for quite some time. We were finally able to coordinate our schedules and we took several hours last Friday to take a ride on the Winter Park Chain of Lakes. We launched from Fort Maitland Park, which just recently reopened after being totally redone. It is a very nice park, complete with restrooms, a playground, and a nice launch area.

Going through the canals between the lakes, Mark spotted some of the largest bamboo either one of us has ever seen. Imagine turning one of those into a cane pole.

A great blue heron was in the mood for a photo op, and stayed there as we passed by. He was not bothered at all by our presence.

One of the interesting aspects of this ride is to get to view the beautiful houses surrounding the lakes. We saw one particular mansion that is still under construction. It takes up several lots, has a giant elephant statue on one side of the back yard, with a huge pool being constructed on the opposite side of the yard. With the amount of glass going in, residents of this mansion are promised stunning views of the lake.

After several hours in the heat, we decided it was time to go in. I'm looking forward to healing from surgery and cooler weather so I can take Mark back out again. Next time, we will try some siteseeing and fishing in Palm Coast.

It's great to be back on the water again! My mother-in-law turned 90 on Sunday, so our family hosted a 90th birthday party for her, and it was a smashing success! She was so happy and emotional seeing everyone that came to be with her!

My brother-in-law and his family all flew in on Friday from Texas to be a part of his mother's birthday celebration. They wanted to surprise their son-in-law, Tony, by setting up this trip while they were in town to attend the party. We weren't sure if the trip was going to happen because Hurricane Nicole decided to pay us a visit two days before fishing, and one day before they arrived.

My usual launching place was closed due to damage from the storm, however, after a few phone calls and texts, I learned that the ramp at Devil's Elbow Fishing Resort was still open for business. At low tide, the water levels were very high, and there was very little boat traffic on the river that morning. It was overcast and cool, and the perfect time to enjoy some sightseeing and fishing. Tony caught a redfish, two mangrove snapper, and a very excitable ladyfish that came dancing out of the water! After our fun on the water, Joe treated us to a very delicious lunch at one of my favorite Palm Coast restaurants, Captain's BBQ. It's great to be back on the water again!

Although I am recovering from knee surgery and am not yet ready to take my boat out, I was able to fish with my friend PauI on his boat. We had a really great time today. He caught a small redfish. I followed up with an oyster cluster and a small flounder. It was windy and overcast, but very relaxing to be back on the water. Getting in and out of the boat was easier than putting my shoes on. We followed up the day by having a great lunch at Captain's BBQ!
