Shout out to all the runners currently participating in the historic Escarpment Trail Race in the Catskills of New York. We are lucky to still coach a bunch of athletes out there who have worked their tails off to be able to join the fun.

This iconic race has been running since 1977, with the same race director, Dick Vincent.

Thanks to the dedicated race director and volunteers, this race has become an indelible part of our trail running history. It’s a bucket list race that’s worth any amount of travel to experience. We hope everyone is making their way through the obstacles of Beast Coast Trail Running, where your arms often do as much work as your legs.

Miss you all!

Wishing everyone an amazing time tomorrow at the Breakneck Point Trail Races! Even though we won't be there in person, our spirits will be cheering on our athletes who continue to push their limits year after year. Shout out to the old crew (the OG's) - despite some of us moving away, we still stay connected. Good memories.

Taking care of our own health is of utmost importance for numerous reasons, however, it becomes meaningless if the land that we walk on, the waters we rely upon, and the air we breathe are continually destroyed, polluted, and abused. We are not the only ones who depend on the Earth, but we are the only ones who can protect it.

As outdoor enthusiasts, we can take a leadership role by following the leave no trace principles. For us that includes picking up your dog’s p**p and disposing of it properly. Here in Salida, CO, they even go as far as to have a dog p**p pick up day, you’d be surprised of how many bags they end up with.

In short do your part: Recycle, reuse, and be more mindful of our individual responsibilities and imprint. If we all work together we can make a difference.

Happy Earth Day!

This past weekend, we had the opportunity to return to the Moab area but this time was to help some of our athletes make it to the finish line.

The finish line often is the only goal one works toward. Everyone is not participating for a time goal; some are there to challenge themselves by completing the distance. We are lucky that we have all age groups on our roster, some going for the win while others are going for a challenge of a lifetime by completing the distance.

Athlete highlights:

Marcia joined our roster 4 years ago, wanting to become a trail runner, then ultimately an ultra trail runner. This weekend, in her 57th year, her ultimate goal was accomplished; she became an ultra runner! We share age here because it really is never too late to try something new or challenge yourself. For some, they’re just beginning. So far, the trails have brought her to Colorado, Mont Blanc, Moab, New Jersey, and Florida, where she currently lives. Trails take your mind to places you would never think of.

Chris finished his first ultra at the age of 60 and completed his 4th this weekend at the Arches 50k. So far, now at age 61, he has completed 3 50ks and a 50-miler. Their weekly schedule is very strength-based: minimum 3 days of focused strength and mobility, with 7-10 hours of targeted aerobic work, not all running.

A bit of discipline, drive, passion, and consistency will allow you to reach heights you never thought possible. Don’t let age define your health.

Shout out to Mad Moose Events; it was wonderful to feel the ultra spirit alive and well. All ages, all levels were out seeing what they had on that day. It is so inspiring to crew, pace, or volunteer at any trail event. We can’t recommend it enough. See you again soon. Photos: Joe Azze & Elizabeth Azze

A throwback to the 2018 U.S. Dion Snowshoe National Championship in Woodford, Vermont at the Prospect Mountain Nordic Ski Center. They had just received over 40 inches of snow!

Snowshoeing is one of our favorite winter activities. What we like most about it is that it is an easy way to introduce most people to winter travel on snow covered trails who may be reluctant to get on skis. It is a great way to get people outdoors on those cold winter deep snow days.

Remember to bring your snowshoes to popular backcountry and cross country ski areas so you don’t post hole, creating a dangerous situation for both the skier and snowshoer.

Taking a moment to celebrate some of our athletes’ past weekend events.

Many of our athletes are multi-sport athletes. Being a multi-sport athlete offers a bit of freedom to adventure in different ways; from mountain trail running to maintaining speed to run a sub 3 hour marathon, competing at a top level during Spartan obstacle racing to doing multi day mountain running stage races, running 100 milers to gravel endurance bike racing, rock climbing and even deep scuba diving, the list goes on.

We are here to tell you that it is ok to divide your attention to another sport or to add cross training. You will reap the benefit of being a more versatile athlete who will tap into another version of yourself while decreasing chances of injury, burnout, etc. So, don’t be afraid to try something new or to add cross training into your routine.

Congrats to everyone on great weekend of PRs and thank you for your continued support!

The 54th NYC marathon is tomorrow and this happens to mark our 15th year having runners line up to join the party.

It’s pretty amazing to think in 1970 only 124 participants toed the line for loops in Central Park and now it’s the largest marathon in the world boasting more than 50,000 participants.

Some will run it in just over 2 hours while others will take the full 6 hours & 35 min to complete. Whether you’re running, walking or rolling, we hope you enjoy your tour through the greatest city in the world, in our opinion:).

It’s safe to say that with the high amounts of stress many of us are exposed to each day, not only on the fitness and training side but also with the responsibilities that go along with family, work, life, etc., there’s plenty of room for improvement with our rest & recovery (R&R) strategy.

You can do all of the training and working out that you want but you won’t reach your goals until you consistently address your R&R. It’s during sleep that the body adapts to the stresses of training and life, and it will become stronger and healthier for it. Without it, there will be no improvements, it is that simple.

Here are some tips to improve your sleep quality. Let us know in the comments if you have any others that work well for you.

1. Improve your sleep by sticking to a schedule and routine.
2. Get blackout shades for your room. The darker your room is, the better.
3. Turn off all electronics, including your phone and put electrical tape over any small lights coming from household devices.
4. Be sure to use the “Do Not Disturb and “Sleep mode” feature on your iPhone or Android devices. Many of us have the habit of checking our phones for messages throughout the night; wait until the morning! The longer you are in a deep restful sleep, the stronger and more productive you will be for the upcoming day.
5. Make sure the room you’re sleeping in is well ventilated, quiet, uncluttered and cold.
6. Avoid alcohol and caffeine entirely or at least avoid caffeine after 12pm and keep alcohol to a minimum.
7. No TV in the bedroom.
8. NAP! I know, who has time for a nap but a nap doesn’t always mean to jump into your bed and fall into a deep sleep. It can be a quick 5 - 10 minute nap done anywhere. Just sitting quietly for 5 minutes with your eyes closed while including relaxed breaths will clear the mind, re-balance your energy and give you a feeling of renewal.
9. Resting means relaxing without the guilt.

This photo is from a multi day winter adventure in the Adirondacks, the year was 2017. We were heading up Mount Marcy in the morning so we needed a good night sleep.

The Escarpment trail run has been a Catskill Mountain treasure since 1977, yup that’s right! It is a classic trail race that is a tradition on many athletes' calendars year after year. Shout out to RD Dick Vincent and others who keep events like this going. Our community thanks you!

Best of luck to all runners this Sunday as you race through history, and thank you to all of the volunteers.
