Have you always wanted to be able to do a pull-up?

If you want to get the most out of your pull-ups and progress toward your first strict pull-up without assistance, one of the most important things you can do is create maximal tension throughout the entire body while focusing on scapular, shoulder, and core control. Even if you can’t complete a full repetition or get your chin fully above the bar this is one cue that you most tell your body. Be as explosive as you can, lean back, shoulder blades engaged, squeeze the core and glutes, and externally rotate the shoulder. Next, drive it on home. Or as best you can. Then rest and repeat. (Once we become efficient at this technique we can implement other techniques like holding at the top, eccentric loading, or called negatives).

Create full-body tension and performing 1–2 high quality reps with the intent to create maximal activation. This can help improve neural drive, motor-unit recruitment, coordination, and your ability to produce force.

The goal isn’t just to get your chin over the bar, it’s to teach your body how to create and control the tension necessary to perform a strong, strict pull-up.

Deadlifts are more than just picking a barbell up off the floor. They’re one of the most fundamental movement patterns we develop as humans. Watch any toddler explore their environment and you’ll see the foundation of a deadlift every time they squat down to pick up a toy.

Somewhere along the way, many of us convinced ourselves, “I’ve never known how to deadlift.” But that’s not true. You did know how. You just forgot.

Years of sitting in desks from K-12 and then through college and our careers, sitting, is the new smoking. It has slowly taken away many of the natural movement patterns you once had. We ask our kids to spend more time sitting still than moving, exploring, and interacting with the world around them. Then we’re surprised when adults struggle to bend over, lift safely, or move without low back pain.

Personally, that’s why I love teaching the deadlift. It’s not just about lifting a barbell. But it’s about restoring a movement your body was designed to do. It teaches you how to move efficiently, build strength, create spinal stability, and carry those skills into everyday life. Therefore, whether you’re picking up groceries, a laundry basket, your kid, or your grandkids you will be prepared and ready.

Sometimes the goal isn’t to learn something new but it’s about the rediscovering of a movement your body had already known.

And that’s exactly what happened this weekend. 💪

Let’s talk about the importance of repetition when learning a new lift or refining your deadlift technique. 💪🍑

Michael Jordan needed tens of thousands of reps to become one of the greatest. 🏀 So, let’s not expect a complex compound lift to be perfect after just 3 sets of 10 reps. 😑

Reset before every rep. Brace your core, engage your lats by trying to “bend” or “break” the bar, and activate your glutes by squeezing them together. At the same time, create external rotation and abduction at the hips by driving your knees out toward your forearms (assuming you’re using a conventional or Romanian deadlift with your hands outside your knees).

Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all cue. This tip won’t apply to everyone and may not be appropriate for a sumo deadlift.
