When we're stretching dogs out on longer marks, we'll sometimes use a large white buoy to help them learn to see the area of the fall.

The idea is to use the buoy as a visual... then pick up the bumper.

Scarlet had a different plan 😂🐾

Some kennel combinations remind us of movies.

This one reminded us of a legend. 🤠

Annie Everett and Oakley Bowen may be in different stages of their training journey, but together they gave us one of the most recognizable names in the Wild West.

Annie is currently working through our Advanced Gundog Program, while Oakley recently completed Puppy Imprinting and headed home earlier this week.

BUILDING RETRIEVE DRIVE AT HOME 🐾

When puppy owners pick up their new retriever, we encourage them to focus on two things:

Teaching respectful behaviors.

Building retrieve drive.

The obedience can come later.

Our goal isn’t just teaching a puppy to retrieve. It’s teaching them to WANT to retrieve.

Use a long lead to help create success.

When they bring it back, celebrate. Get down at their level, pet them, praise them, and let them enjoy the moment.

Don’t immediately take the object away. They worked hard for it.

Keep sessions short and always leave them wanting one more retrieve.

A simple guideline: age in months = maximum retrieves per session.

If retrieve drive slows down between 4–6 months of age, teething may be the reason.

One of the most important things to remember:

The last retrieve is often the most important retrieve.

If the last thing they remember is, “That was fun!” they’ll be excited to do it again.

Leave them wanting one more retrieve. 🐾

When Max and Ruby ended up at BR at the same time, we couldn’t help ourselves.

A large percentage of our staff grew up watching Max & Ruby, so this one was destined to happen.

No bunny rabbits here… just Max, a Gun Dog-in-training poodle, and Ruby, Sophie’s little sidekick, with perfectly timed names. 🐾❤️

DOGS LEARN IN PICTURES, NOT VIDEOS. 🐾

One of the biggest keys to successful dog training is timing.

Good timing and consistency go hand in hand. When feedback is delivered at the right moment and repeated consistently, dogs learn faster and with less confusion.

Think of each behavior as a snapshot. Dogs connect consequences to what they are doing in that exact moment, which is why clear, timely feedback is so important.

A question we hear often is:

“How long do you train dogs each day?”

It depends on the goal.

Dogs have a very short window about 1.3 seconds to connect praise or correction to a behavior. That’s why we say dogs learn in pictures, not videos.

A dog that sits and is praised immediately connects the reward to the sit. Wait too long, and they’re already focused on something else.

Because of this, many training sessions are only 5–15 minutes. The goal isn’t more training time..it’s better timing.

Timing matters.
Consistency matters.
Communication matters.

And every interaction is a chance to teach. 🐾

A few weeks ago, Rody and Kristin snuck away for a birthday and anniversary getaway. When they got back, the staff had a little surprise waiting for them 😂🌭🐾

Let’s just say the crew really mustard up some creativity while they were gone.

There were hot dogs everywhere.

And because apparently that wasn’t enough, the fire ants decided to ketchup with the party too 😂🐜🌭

Frankly, we’re still impressed by the commitment.
