What a week the Rat Route Chess Board has been! I love this community and the vibes here.

Bala, Laura, Brian, Sam, Chandler, Billy, the Joshes and many more have been amazing!! From organizing and coordinating to helping with safety and launch assist, you guys rock! Thank you for volunteering your time! We appreciate you! 🫶🏼

I had a great time representing Little Cloud and watching and helping with kiting and seeing some sparks get lit with some break through skills.

I loved hearing about the multiple low saves from the guys demoing the Gracchio Mk3 and Urubu Mk2 - nice work!

I wanted to challenge myself today and fly a smaller, less efficient glider - so I took out my trusty Puffin v2 (19m²) for the morning flight. I showed others the thermal and took it to 5 grand and flew to LongSword!

Kiting galore!! 🪂 at Rat Route 238 2026

Kite, kite, kite - you can't kite too much! We had a super fun kiting sesh that turned into a fun and challenging rainbow attempt!! Thanks to those who participated and came out for the kiting sesh! You guys are looking great!

And a fun glass-off flight on the Puffin! I flew the 16m² to Longsword with ease! (I love this glider!!)

There was ok to good flying (depending on who you asked), not so great wind for kiting (but still fun), bald eagles, live music, glide plane comps, winery, and interesting air for the evening flight.

I chose to fly my beloved Puffin 16 and will forever love this glider!

We had lots of different conversations during the "tea talks" at Rat Route 238 today! Thanks to everyone who spoke and volunteered and helped out and for letting me speak. Also thank you to Debbie who always captures the moment! 📷

Some take-aways from my talk are as follows:

Conditions, conditions, conditions - always choose good conditions to fly in.

Kite, kite, kite - get to know your wing, be in control, and launch when you're ready!

Speed wings vs Mini wings: aspect ratio and cell count differentiate the two

Mini wings vs. parakites: adding kite risers is like having "speed at your fingertips"

What's the magic number you can fly safely in high wind? - There is no magic number, it's baby steps and slowly building your skill set. You can't just buy a smaller wing and launch into strong winds that are higher than your skill set. Slowly work your way up by adding a couple mph more than what you fly on your full size. Down size slowly. Kite, kite, kite, and know how to kill the glider in strong wind.
