Jane Self-Defense Jane V. McKenna has more than two decades of experience in martial arts and self-defense. She is a B Jhoon Rhee was a student of the great Bruce Lee.

First Degree Black Belt in Karate from the Gary Fookes Institute of Tae Kwon Do. Jane began her training with Master Fookes who studied under the world famous Jhoon Rhee. Jane continues in the style of these Masters, her mentors. Jane also trained for several months in “street fighting” to hone her skills. Jane has learned to mix street fighting with h

er skills of martial arts. Board Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).) She has run 14 New York City Marathons and one Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. Cane Instructor under the Cane Masters ® System of Self-Defense. Member of the Cane Masters International Association (CMIA). Jane has honed her skills to teach self-defense using a cane for both fitness and defense. Jane received her Black Belt in the Cane Masters System of Self-Defense, and is always honing her skills in her craft. Real life experience: Jane’s story

Here are some de-escalation tips, no physical activity required:

Words are powerful. Avoid words like relax, calm down, shut up and chill out.
Use the word “I” instead of “you.” Put on your best poker face and keep your expression neutral. Remain calm and keep your vocal control—pitch, volume and tempo of your voice is important. Avoid yelling, and speak at a moderate tempo to convey confidence, calmness and control.

This might sound like a lot to remember in the heat of the moment but learning these tips now can come in handy in a sticky situation.
