This weekend we traded ranch chores for fishing rods. 🎣

We worked hard last weekend getting things caught up, so we took a little time to head to the lake, fish, reset, and enjoy a slower pace for a change.

Ranch life has a way of keeping the list full. There is always something to fix, check, clean, move, feed, mow, repair, or plan.

So when you can take a little break, you take it.

A few rods, a little boat time, a good sunset, and some family time was exactly what we needed.

The ranch will still be there when we get back.

And so will the to-do list. 😂

How did y'all spend the Labor Day weekend??

A little follow up on the prickly pears!!

Syrup....because the first batch of jelly failed 😂 but MAN it's good in a margarita mix with a DosXX (Prickly pear Dos-a-rita)
Wes even tried it in his wh***ey and it cut the burn substantially!

My second batch of jelly. Hopefully it turns out. We will see in the morning

And w**e 🍷this glass is from the first fermentation, and it tastes like a dry red. Not super fantastic, but not quite "rocket fuel", so I'm excited to see what the secondary fermentation does!

Isn't the color beautiful though!?
Nature is amazing!
What could I make next?

Floodwaters damaged it. Work got this feeder standing again.

When the flood came through the ranch, getting some things back up and running took more than just a quick fix.

It meant checking the country, looking over roads, watching the weather, making sure blinds and access points stayed in good shape, and putting tools on damages so they could get back where they belong.

This feeder in particular now is...Standing. Back out in the field. Filled. And ready to go.

That's ranch work.

A lot of what sets Lazy L Ranch apart happens long before a hunter ever arrives. Feeders get checked. Water gets watched. Roads get cleaned up. Blinds get maintained. Wildlife movement gets paid attention to. Damages get fixed one job at a time.

There isn't much glamour in a feeder repair, but there's a whole lot of purpose.

Good stewardship means taking care of the habitat, the herd, the equipment, and the country through every season, not only when it's time to hunt. When guests come to Lazy L Ranch TX, they're stepping onto a place that's been worked, watched, and cared for with the long game in mind.

That's the difference we believe matters.

Sometimes conservation looks like a mature axis buck moving through the brush.

Sometimes it looks like a repaired feeder standing back in the field after a flood.

Both matter.

If you're wanting to plan a hunt with folks who take the land, the wildlife, and the experience seriously, send us a message. We'd be glad to visit and help you find the right fit.

Last light has a way of making every minute count.

The temperature drops, the ranch gets quiet, and all that scouting, patience, and time in the field comes down to one question:

Is tonight the night?

That’s the kind of hunting we want people to experience at Lazy L Ranch. No rushed schedule. No assembly line. Just real time in the field, good country, and the chance to make the kind of memory that sticks with you long after the sun goes down.

If an axis, hog, or turkey hunt has been sitting on your list, now’s a pretty good time to start planning it your hunt.

Message us about available hunt dates and let’s get you out here.

We may have been quiet on here, but the ranch sure hasn’t been.

Ranch life keeps moving whether you post it or not. Wildlife still needs water, equipment still breaks, cameras still need checking, fences still need fixing, hunts are being planned, and there is always something happening behind the scenes.

So consider this your sign that Lazy L Ranch is back in your feed. 😏

What do y’all want to see more of: wildlife, behind-the-scenes ranch life, or hunts?

Not every harvest out here comes with antlers.
The land has been providing in a different way lately, and this time it came in the form of prickly pear fruit.
We picked a bucketful and now the fun part starts.

Jelly is definitely happening.
Syrup for drinks is on the list.
And we may even try our hand at a little prickly pear w**e. 🍷

This is one of the things we love about ranch life. The land provides in more ways than one, and when something is in season, we try to make good use of it.

There is something pretty satisfying about walking out with an empty bucket and coming back with enough to turn into something you can enjoy long after the season is over.

Different kind of harvest. Same gratitude.

Anybody have a favorite prickly pear recipe we need to try?

You get ONE hunt at Lazy L Ranch. What are you choosing?

🦌 Axis
🦃 Turkey
🐗 Hog

What are you choosing?

And before somebody says, “Can I just hunt all of them?”… we respect the strategy. 😂

One of our favorite things about this ranch is the variety of wildlife that calls it home. Every species brings a completely different hunt, different challenge, and different story.

So let’s hear it.

The wildlife may not know who keeps the extra water flowing, but we do.

Behind the scenes at Lazy L Ranch, water is always on the checklist.

This windmill helps move water down to a pond used by the wildlife, so checking production is not just maintenance. It is part of making sure the animals have a dependable water source, especially when the heat settles in and the ground starts drying out.

And because ranch people are practical, that same setup may or may not double as what we lovingly call the redneck pool. 😂
Not fancy. Definitely functional.

A lot of the work out here happens long before a hunter arrives. Checking water, repairing equipment, watching the weather, and keeping everything running are all part of taking care of the land and the wildlife that depend on it.
Sometimes conservation looks like a healthy buck.
Sometimes it looks like a man standing on a ladder beside a windmill in snake boots.
Both matter.

Alan had chased axis before. This was the buck that finally made the wait worth it.
Alan came to us from Mississippi with an axis still sitting high on his hunting list.

He had been on previous hunts elsewhere trying to make it happen, but this weekend at Lazy L Ranch, everything finally came together.

And it came together with the right buck.

This mature axis measured 32 inches and carried plenty of character, including a bladed main beam, a beautiful coat, and a rack that stood out from every angle.

That is the thing about axis hunting. You can know exactly what you are looking for, but the animals still have a vote. When the right opportunity finally presents itself, all the patience and miles leading up to it become part of the story.

Congratulations, Alan. We’re glad Lazy L Ranch got to be the place where you finally checked this one off the list. 🦌
