Today marks 4 years since the tragic passing of Oxnard Police Department Officer Nathan Martin. Nathan had just finished his shift and was driving home when he was involved in a traffic collision not far from the police station.

Nathan was hired by the Oxnard Police Department in December of 1999. In his 20 years with the department, his assignments included: Patrol Officer, Property Crimes Detective, Traffic Unit, Parent Project Instructor, OPD Liaison for Crime Stoppers, Academy Instructor (Spanish), Field Training Officer, and School Resource Officer at Hueneme High School.

Nathan maintained an exceptional level of commitment to the Hueneme High School campus and established a very strong relationship with the school administrators and students. Principal Adrian Ayala often praised Nathan for his unique abilities to handle student issues, not only involving criminal matters, but issues concerning family and the dynamics that exist at the student’s home. Students said that Nathan gave them a voice. They were able to ask him police related questions and get their information first-hand, as opposed to hearing rumors or relying on social media, etc. This truly showed Nathan’s consideration and care for the people he served.

He enjoyed spending time with his family at home, reading books, and watching basketball. He was a huge fan of the Los Angeles Lakers. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints and an assistant volleyball coach at Hueneme High.

On this day, please take a moment of pause to remember Nathan. Our thoughts will also be for his family - his wife Marita, sons Gabriel and David; daughter Soraya, his mother Susan, his brother Tom (retired Oxnard PD Officer), and the rest of his family.
