I forgot about this video from opening morning of turkey season. This was the second group of bucks…first one had five in it and this one did too. I had 10 bucks come by me before I ever saw a turkey…some of them were small with nubs starting to grow back but there were about four that had some big bases with about 6 inches of growth that were really thick. They were kind of annoying at the time because they were fascinated with my ol momma hen decoy and didn’t want to leave but later as I thought about it I thought Wow that really makes me excited for when fall comes around!

Hope everyone had a great morning…this was the only fella making a noise where I was and he left with the girls for a few hours but when they separated and went to nest he came back towards where I had called to him early and I just gave him 3 or 4 soft calls and that’s all it took!

Hunter Arrested After Using Live Turkey In Attempt To Attract Gobblers

A local hunter was arrested back in 2024 following an investigation into illegal methods used during the previous spring turkey season.

According to court records, wildlife officers began looking into the situation after receiving reports of unusual turkey activity near a field edge.

Witnesses claimed they observed what appeared to be a live turkey confined near a hunting setup.

When officers investigated the area at the time, they allegedly found:
• a live domesticated turkey tethered near a decoy spread
• a ground blind positioned within range
• and multiple wild turkeys actively responding in the area

The hunter reportedly told officers he believed using a live bird would increase his chances of bringing in a gobbler.

He stated he was “just trying something different” and didn’t think it would be an issue.

Officials noted that using live animals to attract game is illegal and considered an unfair method of take.

The case proceeded through the court system over a couple months.

The hunter was officially found guilty of violating hunting regulations related to unlawful methods.

I’ve had several messages asking if we do turkey hunts and unfortunately we don’t…we’re like a lot of others in southern Missouri and across the country with turkey populations being so low in the last couple decades, so turkeys are so sacred in our area and they do seem to be making a bit of a comeback…we sure hope and pray they get back to the numbers we had in the 80s and 90s.
That said there is a ton of public hunting in our area and this is the first year that nonresident hunters can only take one bearded bird and I think this will help some for sure…a lot of the public hunting areas that I’ve hunted (Wolf Mountain Area and The Irish Wilderness) have been hunted more by nonresidents it seems than Missouri hunters and so this step is going to deter a lot of out of state hunters and I don’t blame them…I was actually wanting to go back to Oklahoma and turkey hunt this year but it’s only one tom and it’s not only nonresidents but okies too.
Hopefully in the next few years we have some great hatches and numbers thrive and who knows maybe in the future turkey hunting will be a part of LCWs!
