. โ€œOwn The Ballโ€ was a mantra Coach Silverfield and OC Tim Cramsey taught their players over the offseason. The message was for players to buy in on the importance of taking care of the football. For Hog fans, this was a nice change of pace after the 118th finish in the FBS (out of 136) in giveaways per game last year. Through 1/12th of the season, against a FCS opponent, nonetheless, Arkansas showed they were not capable of ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ the football. Two lost fumbles, one interception, and another shouldโ€™ve-been-interception is as poor of a start in that department as you can get.

Eight accepted penalties (at least one was declined), multiple drops, and a lack of ex*****on and/or physicality on the offensive line provided a gloom over this game. It felt a little too similar to the Portland State snoozefest in โ€˜19.

It is worth mentioning, Week 1 games arenโ€™t always indicative of future success. Eastern Illinois in โ€˜18 was a 55-point outburst in the inaugural Chad Morris game. Nobody needs a reminder of how that year turned out. On the flip side, Rice had a lead on the Hogs at the half in โ€˜21 which proved to be the best season since the Petrino era.

On the bright side, the defense looked sharp. Especially in the first half, I saw guys flying around and being physical. Quick shoutout to #44 Ben Bogle for leading the team in tackles and tacking on a nice pass deflection. After giving up 36 points/game last season, I am confident in saying this number will get cut down. Kudos to Ron Roberts and Co. Small sample size, but this unit should keep the Hogs in a lot of games - the inverse of the season prior.

KJ Jackson didnโ€™t have his best day. I wasnโ€™t going to be surprised to see AJ Hill jump into the mix at some point given how โ€œcloseโ€ the QB competition was this fall. He wasnโ€™t helped much by his OL, but I didnโ€™t see much improvement in his game from what we are accustomed to.

The road doesnโ€™t get easier. Our next foe, Utah, put up 66 points on Idaho. To wrap up the non-con slate, Tulsa smothered Okie State in a game where they were 14-point underdogs. The path to any easy remaining wins is nil.

GAME 1. PREDICTION.

If youโ€™re new hereโ€ฆ please read closely. Comment your prediction for todayโ€™s game. The winner (tie goes to whoever commented first) will win a $100 gift card; this time to CJ's Butcher Boy Burgers. Thatโ€™s a lot of burgers. Game previewโฌ‡๏ธ

The Silverfield era begins on a steamy afternoon in Fayetteville against North Alabama.

The Lions were also a fellow 2-10 team from a year ago, with their only matchup against an FBS school coming against Western Kentucky in a 55-6 loss.

I am most excited to see KJ Jackson suit up in his second career start (first being against Missouri last year) and building off of his career 64% completion percentage and 3TD/0INT numbers.

I am also eager to see new Special Teams Coordinator, Chad Lunsford, put out a quality product that hasnโ€™t been common in our program in recent memory.

Lastly, go check out College Football Kings for the best content this football season.

Welcome to the SEC, Ryan Silverfield. While a 5-1 record against active coaches in the league isnโ€™t too shabby, it is hard to envision even five wins in 2026.

Letโ€™s look at some data to back into my 3-9 prediction. First, the most glaring headwind facing the Razorbacks is their schedule (who is surprised?). ESPNโ€™s lovely College Football Power Index features the Hogs at #1 on their Strength Of Schedule (SOS). SOS, literally. The silver lining of the inaugural year of the nine-game conference slate is five of the nine games get to be played at DWRRS/CARS. Also, no back-to-back road games is a nice touch, along with LSU as the season finale. A trip to Salt Lake City in Week 2 isnโ€™t easy, where Arkansas is already a 9.5-point underdog courtesy of โ€œDraftKingsโ€. After that? The reigning SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs. Gulp.

Next, the talent on the roster is underwhelming. Sam Khan Jr from The Athletic provided the following information. KJ Jackson, our QB1, was ranked in the 5th tier of Quarterbacks across the country. That is alongside QBs from schools such as Air Force, Boise State, and UNLV. This is good for 15th/16 in the conference. โ€œ247Sportsโ€ gave us a 16th/16 ranking for โ€œ2026 Overall SEC Football Team Rankingsโ€. Not ideal.

IF Arkansas does well, it will be because is a positive regression to the mean. This team was one of, if not, the unluckiest teams in CFB last season. From a high level, luck can be derived from a combination of turnovers, special teams, and just a sheer win probability percentage entering the 4th quarter. All three categories were a disaster. The Hogs went 0-6 in one-possession games - and that doesnโ€™t even count the Auburn and Missouri losses where you had a lead at halftime.

I am not convinced Coach Silverfield is the hire to get the program back to where it ๐ง๐ž๐ž๐๐ฌ to be. He is forced to do less with more in Fayetteville when he struggled to do more with less in Memphis.
