The Tred Avon Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program has always been an active and vibrant aspect of TAYC. While maintaining emphasis on sportsmanship, safety, and the joys of sailing, the program teaches all levels of sailing and racing. Our junior program mission seeks to revive the skills and knowledge once taught in successful programs that focus on a quality youth sailing experience. 2026 Optimist New England Championship ⛵️🇺🇸

Newport, Rhode Island — 154 Optimists and one of the most iconic sailing venues in the world.

The 2026 Optimist New England Championship took place in the waters surrounding the legendary Newport Pell Bridge, where strong currents and shifting winds created challenging conditions that tested every sailor’s boat speed, strategy, and ability to adapt.

TAYC was represented by three sailors:

🏆 Heneage Baugh — 37th Overall
🥇 Heneage won one of the races, showing excellent speed and strong decision-making in difficult conditions.

Ellis Williams — 78th Overall
A valuable experience competing in a fleet of 154 sailors at one of the most competitive Optimist events in New England.

Roddy Baugh — 80th Overall
🥈 Roddy delivered a standout performance with a second-place finish in one of the races.

🇺🇸⛵ USODA Optimist National Championship 2026

An incredible week for the TAYC Optimist Racing Team at one of the most competitive events in the United States!

Our 7 sailors competed against the nation’s best in a championship that featured 319 sailors and challenging conditions throughout the week, with everything from light and shifty breezes to strong winds that tested every competitor.

👏 Heneage Baugh led the TAYC team with an outstanding 111th place overall, finishing just a few points shy of qualifying for the Gold Fleet—a tremendous achievement and a sign of the team’s continued progress.

🌱 In the Green Fleet, Catherine James finished 21st out of 35 sailors, gaining valuable experience at her first USODA National Championship.

⛵ Two Regattas. Two Great Days. One Team. 💙

This week, Tred Avon Yacht Club sailors competed at the Lewes Yacht Club Junior Regatta on Wednesday and the Rock Hall Yacht Club Junior Regatta on Thursday. These back-to-back events provided excellent racing and valuable preparation as we look ahead to the USODA National Championship in New Jersey.

Oliver Spear delivered another excellent performance, finishing 4th at Rock Hall YC and 8th at Lewes YC. Congratulations as well to Eliza Whitehead and Ian Cox for their efforts in the ILCA 6 fleet.

Congratulations to all of our Tred Avon Yacht Club Green Fleet sailors for an outstanding weekend of racing, learning, and teamwork at the 2026 Admiral Byrd Regatta!

Another fantastic weekend for the TAYC Junior Racing Team! ⛵💙
Our sailors competed at both the Baltimore County Sailing Center Junior Regatta and the Gibson Island Junior Regatta, delivering outstanding performances and continuing to show the strength and depth of the TAYC program.
At BCSC, the team had an exceptional day in the Optimist fleet with five sailors finishing in the Top 10:

Annapolis Week ✔️⛵Three regattas. Three days. One incredible week of racing.
Our Tred Avon Yacht Club sailors competed at West River Sailing Club, Annapolis Yacht Club, and Severn Sailing Association, facing light but challenging conditions that tested everyone on some of the Chesapeake Bay’s most competitive race courses.
The Optimist RWB fleet featured nearly 70 sailors, bringing together some of the strongest competition in the region. Throughout the week, our team showed great improvement, determination, and teamwork both on and off the water.
A special congratulations to Gene Williams & Vaughn Brooks, who earned 2nd place in all three C420 regattas, an outstanding achievement!

TAYC at the USODA Chesapeake Bay Championship! ⛵️

This weekend, the Tred Avon Yacht Club team competed in the USODA Chesapeake Bay Championship, a qualifier for the 2026 Team Trials.

A total of 63 Optimist sailors from the Chesapeake Bay region, North Carolina, and surrounding areas took part in the event.

It was a challenging weekend with very light winds and strong current, testing everyone’s patience, decision-making, and boat handling.

NJ State at Brant Beach in windy conditions and 120 Optimist. TAYC with 8 RWB Optimist and an amazing Team. Great place to sailing and good performance for our Team. First day no racing for strong winds and second day with medium-high winds and 5 races.
