Hello all,

Thank you to this wonderful community for your support of The 13th Round Boxing Company. Unfortunately, I’ve had to shut down the gym at 111 Bank St in Oxford, NC permanently.

I’m not in a position to keep the gym open and attempts to find a buyer have either been unsuccessful or fallen through.

It’s a great space in the heart of Oxford in one of the best regions in North Carolina. If you or anyone you know is looking to rent space (with equipment) for a combat sports gym, I can put you in contact with the building owners.

Again, thank you all for your support. It’s been a wild ride. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to interact with our members and this community.

Sincerely,
Lynne Fearns
Owner of The 13th Round Boxing Company

Boxing history is filled with amazing stories.

One of the greatest photos in boxing history.

Behind the bars:
Joe Choynski — a Jewish heavyweight who never hid his Jewishness, a true badass.
Jack Johnson (right) — the man who would break barriers and terrify the establishment. In my opinion, the true “baddest man on the planet” (sorry Mike Tyson).

On the surface, they couldn’t have been more different:
Johnson, a young Black fighter in the segregated South.
Choynski, a Jewish immigrant’s son in an America that mocked and distrusted Jews.

One Black, one Jewish. Both looked down upon in their own ways. Both outsiders in the fight game.

In 1901, a young Jack Johnson stepped into the ring in Galveston, Texas. Raw, fast, fearless — but still learning. Across from him stood Joe Choynski, with his crushing punch.

By the third round, Johnson was flat on the canvas. Defeated.

But the real story began after the fight.

Both were arrested that night for the “crime” of prizefighting.

Instead of gloating, Choynski did something remarkable — he trained Johnson behind bars. He taught him patience, defense, timing… the science of boxing. Johnson would later say:

“I owe more to Joe Choynski than to anyone else.
He taught me how not to be knocked out again.”

Years later, Johnson became the first Black heavyweight champion of the world. And he never forgot the man who first beat him — and then built him.

Boxing, like the Bible, teaches the same eternal lessons: humility, honesty, and patience.

Sometimes a defeat is really the beginning of greatness. 🥊
