Bowing the Class In and Out

At the beginning and end of class, the highest-ranking student has the responsibility of formally bowing the class in and out.

The command is:
“Tora Sa Bom Nim!”
Meaning: Turn and face Sa Bom Nim.
Then:

“Sa Dan, Sa Bom Nim Kay Kyung Ret!”
Meaning: Fourth Degree Master Instructor, sir/ma’am, bow.

This is not just something we say — it is a command given to the class and a major sign of respect in the dojang.

Every student should learn how to say it, because you never know when you may be the highest-ranking student in class.

Whether you are a white belt or an advanced student, understanding dojang etiquette is part of becoming a stronger martial artist.

Respect is shown in how we train, how we listen, how we bow, and how we lead.
One day, it may be your turn to lead the class.

Tang Soo Do is more than kicks, punches, and forms.

It is discipline.
It is focus.
It is respect.
It is learning how to push through challenges one step at a time.

At Owosso Martial Arts, we are proud to teach traditional Tang Soo Do in a way that helps students grow both on and off the mat. Whether you are a child, teen, adult, or family training together, every class is a chance to build confidence, strength, and character.

Warning: Lil Ninjas may develop sudden confidence. 🥷

They come in ready to move, play, learn, and sometimes tell us very important stories about dinosaurs, superheroes, or what they had for breakfast.

But while they’re having fun, they’re also building focus, balance, coordination, respect, and confidence.

That’s the magic of Lil Ninjas.

Meet the Face: Thomas Bradford III 🥋🦖🕷️

This week we’re spotlighting a very special Lil Ninja — Thomas Bradford III, better known around the dojang as Tommy!

Tommy loves Spider-Man, dinosaurs, and going on adventures. If you’ve spent time at Owosso Martial Arts, chances are you’ve seen him smiling, talking with students, or making a new friend.

Tommy started training when he was three years old and has grown up around the dojang. He even competed in his first tournament last spring and earned two medals!

It’s hard to miss Tommy at OMA — and don’t be surprised if he walks right up and becomes your friend. 😄

Happy Father's Day!

Today we celebrate the dads, grandpas, stepdads, and father figures who lead by example, support their families, and show up day after day.

At Owosso Martial Arts, we're fortunate to have so many amazing fathers training alongside their children, cheering from the sidelines, volunteering at events, and helping build the strong community we call family.

Martial arts teaches discipline, respect, and perseverance—but for many of our students, those lessons first start at home with Dad.

Thank you for every ride to class, every encouraging word after a tough day, every practice session in the living room, and every example of strength and character you set.

From all of us at Owosso Martial Arts, we wish you a very Happy Father's Day! 🥋❤️

“A good father doesn't tell you how to live. He lives, and lets you watch him do it.”

☀️🥋 Promotion Day in the Park! 🥋☀️

What a beautiful day to celebrate hard work, dedication, and achievement!

Today we're gathered at Harmon Partridge Park for our first-ever outdoor belt promotion and parent appreciation picnic, and we couldn't have asked for a better setting. Surrounded by nature, family, friends, and our martial arts community, we're excited to recognize the students who have put in the time, effort, and perseverance to reach their next rank.

A belt is more than just a color—it represents lessons learned, challenges overcome, and the commitment to keep improving one step at a time.

Thank you to all of our students, parents, families, and supporters who make our dojang such a special place. We are honored to be part of your journey.

Congratulations to everyone promoting today—we can't wait to celebrate with you! 🎉👊

Helping your child stay consistent in karate does not have to be complicated.

Sometimes the biggest progress comes from the simplest habits: showing up regularly, keeping the uniform ready, celebrating effort, and making training part of the weekly family routine.

Karate is not just about learning kicks, punches, or forms. It is about building confidence, discipline, focus, and follow-through — one class at a time.

Here are 5 simple ways parents can help their child stay consistent in training.

🥋 Keep showing up.
🥋 Keep encouraging effort.
🥋 Keep building the routine.

The path to progress is built one class at a time.

At Owosso Martial Arts, one of the first lessons students learn is respect.

Respect starts with the bow, but it does not end there.

It shows up in how we listen.
How we speak.
How we treat our training partners.
How we respond to correction.
How we carry ourselves outside the dojang.

In martial arts, respect is not just something we talk about — it is something we practice every class.

Because strong technique matters.
But strong character matters even more.

🥋 Core Value: Respect
