8/31 ALL practices canceled/ fields CLOSED
☀️ HEAT POLICY FAQ: Because Oklahoma Has No Chill 😅⚽
We know heat-related field closures and practice restrictions can be frustrating, so here are a few answers to the questions we hear most often:
🌡️ “It’s only 98°. Why would we cancel?”
Because temperature alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Heat decisions take into account factors such as humidity, sun exposure and WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) to better understand the actual heat stress on players.
🥵 “But my weather app says the heat index is ___.”
Different apps may show different temperatures or “feels like” readings. We follow established heat-safety guidance and use consistent criteria when making decisions—not whichever weather app has the nicest number that day. 😉
⚽ “Can’t we just take more water breaks?”
Sometimes, yes! Depending on conditions, additional hydration/rest breaks and modified practices may be appropriate. But once conditions reach unsafe thresholds, extra water breaks aren’t a substitute for limiting exposure.
🏃 “My child plays outside in this weather all the time.”
We know! But organized soccer involves sustained physical activity, often in direct sun, and we are responsible for making decisions for all of our players, coaches and referees.
🚫 “What if our team practices somewhere other than OSC?”
If OSC closes practices due to heat, the decision is about player safety—not just the condition of our fields. Teams should not simply move practice somewhere else to get around a heat closure.
⏰ “Why do you wait until later in the day to decide?”
Because Oklahoma weather loves a plot twist. 😂 Conditions can change quickly, so we want to use the most current information possible before making the call.
❤️ The bottom line:
We want everyone on the field. We don’t want to cancel practices. But when it comes down to getting one more practice in versus protecting our players, coaches and referees, safety wins every single time.
Thank you for helping us keep soccer fun, competitive, and safe. ⚽☀️💧
