Here is a close up of the hive entering the swarm trap. When the queen is inside you will see some of the bees start lifting their abdomen and fanning .... they are activating their Nasonov gland to orient other bees to the hive and show them where the queen is. Can you spot any of them doing this?

It’s Spring around here at Hidden Hammock Specialties! A time of new beginnings and speaking of new beginnings, let’s talk about swarming. Swarming is a way for a bee colony to naturally reproduce. Simply stated, when a bee colony becomes very crowded , has a store of honey and lots of drones (male bees), the bees make themselves a new queen. Once the new queen is ready to go, the old queen takes 1/2 the hive and leaves looking for greener pastures.
The new hive finds a place close to the original hive to settle. This is because the queen is usually too heavy to fly anywhere. Bee scouts then fly out to search for a new location to start a new hive. While the scouts are out the rest of the colony clusters around the queen to protect her and they wait. It can take anywhere from hours to days for the bees to find a new location.

Below is a recent swarm we were called on to capture. This colony was re-homed at Hidden Hammock and they seem to be settling in nicely. Some videos of the capture to follow in another post.

Some things to remember when you see a swarm of bees like this:

* While it’s best not to mess with them, the bees are
at their most docile -they have bellies full of honey
because they gorged themselves before leaving the
original hive and they won’t be territorial because
they don’t have a hive to protect. Again it’s best not
to disturb them ... the longer it takes to find a home
the crankier they may become.

* They usually don’t plan on being there very long.
They are only resting until they find a new location.
However if you see them building comb they may
have decided they have the perfect setup...in which
case if their new location doesn’t suit you , you will
have to deal with them.

* Please don’t kill them ... they don’t mean harm and are so important to us (a post on why for another day). If you need them removed call us, we will be happy to assess if it is something we can take care of or provide you with contacts if we can’t.
