Waverly Road, from US Highway 56 to Fountain Street, is a largely residential area characterized by two, local schools. The City of Gardner, KS Government wanted to improve safety and traffic flow for Gardner/Edgerton High School and Madison Elementary, as well as local drivers. During pick-up and drop-off, traffic was congested for both those turning left into the schools and anyone attempting to access one of the side streets. https://loom.ly/Lqy4vos

Designing roadways isn’t exactly like riding a bike... but we think it should feel just as smooth 🚲

Our Roadway Team is always working to keep communities moving. Better connections. Safer streets. More ways for everyone to get where they’re going. That means adding bike lanes, improving trails, and creating spaces where cyclists and pedestrians belong. By integrating bike lanes and designing trails that better accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, we support sustainability and create safer, more accessible transportation options.

In celebration of World Bicycle Day, we invite you to take your bike for a spin and experience one of our project sites firsthand!

This year, we were proud to attend and sponsor the first SAME Missouri River Joint Engineering Training Symposium (JETS). Hosted by the Society of American Military Engineers Omaha Post and the SAME Greater Kansas City Post, the event provided valuable agency updates from across the region and an opportunity to connect with colleagues in the A/E/C industry. As long-term members of SAME, we loved being a part of this inaugural event.

Roundabouts are more than just a traffic trend - they’re a modern solution to some of our most persistent intersection challenges. From improving safety and reducing congestion to lowering emissions and enhancing community aesthetics, modern roundabouts offer a compelling alternative to traditional traffic signals and stop signs. But not every circular intersection is created equal. Understanding what sets modern roundabouts apart, and where they work best, can help cities and transportation departments make smarter, safer infrastructure choices. In honor of our 25th Anniversary, we're highlighting co-workers who've been at Affinis since 2001. Today, we're excited to feature Linda Rottinghaus, PE, Principal. We asked her, “How has Affinis supported your career growth over the years?"

She said, "When I left MoDOT (many, many years ago), I had young children and was looking for a part-time job. This company was one of the few firms that would agree to have a part time co-worker. Affinis allowed me to work three days a week, then gradually add hours, and eventually, move to full-time. Not only did they back my flexible work schedule, they also supported my career growth. I really loved designing, and as my career developed, Affinis helped me pursue a technical path. As I grew and was ready to move into a management role, they were all for it and gave me plenty of opportunities to build on my skills. Affinis has been great place to spend almost my entire career."

For Kansas City, KS students, Carl B. Bruce Middle School and Bertram Caruthers Elementary School were challenging to reach on foot. The sidewalks were older, missing, and broken in many places. The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City wanted to create a safe, continuous path for residents.

To achieve their vision, we added sidewalks on at least one side of Waverly, Cleveland, 18th, 13th, and 11th streets. This allows pedestrians to easily reach either school from the neighborhood. It also provides connectivity to the nearby trails and park system.

Completed two years ago, these designs still deliver for residents. Students can safely reach either school, while area homeowners use the path to access the nearby park and trails system. Changes like these add value to neighborhoods and help residents engage with area amenities in new ways.
