It’s here, the week long lead up to the Wisconsin deer opener. A time that is tradition for many families. Tales of hunting camps past come to mind. The time grandpa missed that 12 pointer, the doe that the first time hunter shot just under. Or, they joys of a long time hunter getting that first deer they expected 5 or 6 years earlier. What those stories are for your hunting party they bring laughs, tears, and every emotion one could imagine.
But what about today? The golden generation is slowing down, and society has youngsters believing they are doing something wrong. Many are not getting involved. If they are, don’t dare talk about it as you are sure to offend someone. There is no surprise that license sales have dropped 1.6% according to the WDNR website.
Let’s look to the future starting today. Hunting is a family tradition and families come together in many different ways. Marriages, groups of friends that you see once a year for this joyous occasion. The group of old card playing, bourbon drinking hunters strapping deer to the front of the ‘55 Chevy to parade through town like a new prized possession is not just old folklore. Help your hunting party grow. Do you know someone who’s lost their family land? How about that son or daughter that is starting to take interest? Now is the time to build your own future. Keep telling those past stories while making new ones.
Here’s to Deer Season 2023. May everyone shoot straight, stay safe, and build memories with the next generation.
