🥋 TEAM VAGHI FUNDRAISER — SUPPORT FLASHBACK 🥋

After the recent tornado caused damage to Flashback Martial Arts, it’s time for our martial arts community to come together and support one of our own.

📅 Saturday, October 24
📍 Impact Martial Arts
⏰ 10:00 AM

We’re hosting a special fundraising seminar and White Belt Gi Tournament, with 100% of the proceeds going toward helping Flashback with repairs and recovery.

🔥 OPEN GUARD SEMINAR | 10:00–11:30 AM

Team Vaghi Black Belts Bill Krieg and Jesse Rueger will be teaching a joint seminar focused on:

Effective Control & Sweeps from Open Guard

💰 Seminar: $25

🏆 WHITE BELT GI TOURNAMENT

Following the seminar, we’ll host a fun, competitive White Belt Gi Tournament. This is a great opportunity for newer competitors to gain experience while supporting an even better cause.

💰 Tournament Registration: $10

Come for the seminar. Compete in the tournament. Do both.

More importantly, come out and help us show what being part of a team and martial arts community is supposed to mean.

Flashback has opened its doors and mats to Team Vaghi members countless times. Now they could use our support.

Every dollar raised goes directly toward helping Flashback recover and repair after the tornado.

IDS APEX IS RETURNING TO IMPACT.

And I’m not looking for 12 students.

I’m looking for 12 training partners.

There’s a problem with a lot of what has become accepted in the self-defense and fi****ms training industries:

Training can make you feel prepared without actually preparing you for the problem.

Predictable attacks. Cooperative partners. Preplanned responses. Fi****ms “decision-making” drills where you already know you’re going to shoot—you’re just waiting for someone to yell which circle, square, or color to shoot.

You might look good in training.

But looking good in practice isn’t the same as learning.

The science of motor learning increasingly points us toward something different: representative problems, variability, perception-action coupling, exploration, contextualized decision-making and appropriately scaled resistance.

In other words:

If you’re training for a fight, eventually the training needs to feel like a fight.

I’ve been guilty of following accepted training methodologies myself. But as I’ve learned more, my training philosophy has changed.

I spent years as an Oshkosh police officer and Defense and Arrest Tactics instructor. I’ve also experienced violence outside the training hall. I’ve been attacked and have had to defend myself and fellow officers.

I know the difference between demonstrating a technique and dealing with someone who actually wants to hurt you.

And I’ll be doing this training with you.

Instructor. Training partner. Role player. Student.

We’ll succeed together.

We’ll fail together.

And we’ll get better together.

IDS APEX — PHASE 1: AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS

16 weeks exploring the problems facing the armed citizen when confronted with physical assaults, knives, blunt weapons and fi****ms.

Classroom training.

Physical training.

Contextualized decision-making.

Real resistance.

Scenario training.

And live fire.

Then we’ll build upon those skills with Phase 2: Family Security Operations & Close Protection, where the problem changes from protecting yourself to protecting someone else.

Only 12 committed participants.

Impact Self-Defense Program members: Included with membership for the first 12 who register.

Outside the program: $299 for the complete 16-week Phase 1 course, space permitting.

More details coming soon.

Don’t train to look good.
Train to get better.

IDS APEX is returning.

🥋 STRIPE ALERT: NICK DROVER EDITION 🥋

Congratulations to Nick Drover on earning his first stripe on his blue belt!

Following our recent public service announcements regarding proper stripe maintenance, Nick entered tonight with a significant advantage:

It’s remarkably easy to keep all your stripes when you don’t have any.

Problem solved. Nick now officially has one stripe to lose. Please govern yourself accordingly.

As with every Jiu Jitsu practitioner, Nick has his strengths and weaknesses.

Strength: Triangles. 🔺
Weakness: Also triangles. 🔺

Nick doesn’t just look for triangles. He believes in triangles.

Armbar available? Triangle.
Back take? Triangle.
Easy sweep? Triangle.
Opponent standing six feet away? There’s probably a triangle here somewhere.

Sometimes the triangle exists. Sometimes it absolutely does not. This has never stopped Nick from attempting to manifest one through sheer commitment.

Congrats, Nick, on Blue Belt Stripe #1.

Protect it. Cherish it. And please consult Tim for absolutely no advice whatsoever on stripe retention. 😂🥋

🚨 COMBAT ATHLETE PROMOTION ALERT 🚨

Congratulations to Jeff “Combat Athlete” Berzowski on officially earning his third stripe on his white belt! 🥋

Why “Combat Athlete”?

Mostly because Jeff appears to have been quarried rather than born.

Over the past two years, several people have made the unfortunate decision to kick Jeff during training. The results have been remarkably consistent:

Jeff: completely fine.
Person who kicked Jeff: injured.

One nearly broke their leg.

At this point, kicking Jeff is less of a martial arts technique and more of a structural integrity test. Scientists remain unsure whether Jeff is composed primarily of muscle, concrete, or load-bearing stone.

Jeff’s journey hasn’t been without adversity. There was a period when dirty rashguards were routinely abandoned at the gym, forcing us to investigate whether Jeff actually had access to a washing machine.

But one thing Jeff DOES take seriously is his belt.

His stripes are present.
His stripes are accounted for.
His stripes remain firmly attached.

Can he properly tie the belt after all this time?

Absolutely not.

But nobody’s perfect.

Congratulations to Jeff “Combat Athlete” Berzowski on earning stripe #3. Well deserved.

🥋🥋🥋

Built like a brown belt.
Ties his belt like a trial-class student.

🚨 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

We would like to congratulate Tim Ryan on officially earning his 1st stripe on his blue belt… for the second time. 🥋😂

Yes. You read that correctly.

Due to Tim’s longstanding commitment to not maintaining the stripes on his belt, he has achieved something we believe to be unprecedented:

🏆 Two-Time 1-Stripe Blue Belt

Could Tim actually be a 2-stripe blue belt by now?

Maybe.

Could he be a 3-stripe blue belt?

More than likely, no.

Does anyone know?

Certainly not Tim.

So please, let Tim’s historic achievement serve as a reminder to everyone:

MAINTAIN. YOUR. STRIPES.

Congratulations, Tim, on once again reaching a milestone you had already reached. 😂👏

🔥 TONIGHT AT IMPACT — BACK TO THE FUNDAMENTALS 🔥

Tonight we welcome Professor Bill Krieg to Impact Martial Arts for a special Team Vaghi Northern Region Workshop from 6:00–8:00 PM.

The focus: the fundamentals that make everything else work.

Professor Krieg will be diving into material from the original Rickson Gracie Stripe Test, exploring the details of base, connection, structure, pressure, and efficient movement that form the foundation of our Jiu Jitsu.

There’s a difference between knowing a technique and understanding why it works. Tonight is about developing that deeper understanding.

🥋 All levels are encouraged to attend.

🥋 MORE THAN A WEEKEND OF JIU JITSU

Some weekends remind you why you started training in the first place.

The Team Vaghi Northern Region Camp was one of those weekends.

It started with our Invisible Confidence Kids Camp, watching young students challenge themselves, learn to work through difficult positions, and discover a little more confidence in themselves.

Then we stepped onto the mats for two days with Professor Rodrigo Vaghi—learning, rolling, asking questions, and going deeper into the fundamentals and invisible details that have been passed down through generations of Jiu Jitsu.

But some of the best moments happened after the training stopped.

Sitting around the table together at Manila Resto. Conversations between teammates and friends. Gathering around the bonfire at Professor Bill Krieg’s house. Watching the fireworks together after a long day on the mats.

Those moments matter.

Because someday we probably won’t remember every technique taught at a seminar. But we will remember the people we trained beside, the conversations we had, the challenges we went through together, and the friendships built along the way.

This weekend also marked some important milestones.

🟣 Chris and Tyler earned their Purple Belts.
🔵 Arick received his 4th stripe on his Blue Belt.
🟣 Chris Baardsen received his 4th stripe on his Purple Belt.
🟤 Brandon Ansell received his 4th stripe on his Brown Belt.

Each represents years of showing up, struggling, learning, improving, and continuing forward.

We’re incredibly grateful to Professor Rodrigo Vaghi for continuing to share his Jiu Jitsu, his experience, and the traditions of our lineage with us—and to Professor Bill Krieg for his leadership and commitment to building Team Vaghi Northern Region.

Jiu Jitsu gives us techniques.

But if you stay around long enough, you realize it gives you something much bigger.

People. Relationships. Stories. A shared history.

Years from now, belts will fade and the details of individual training sessions may be forgotten.

But we’ll remember weekends like this.

And we’ll remember who was standing beside us.

Thank you to everyone who was part of it.
