We’re incredibly proud to share this feature from Discover Oshkosh telling the story behind O-Town Iron—from Jacob opening our doors at just 21 years old to the mission that drives us today.

What started as an idea to build a great gym has become something much bigger: a community where people can feel welcomed, build confidence, and become strong enough to keep doing the things they love.

We’re grateful for every member, employee, and person in the Oshkosh community who has helped shape O-Town Iron into what it is today.

Thank you to Grace Lim and Discover Oshkosh for sharing our story! Take a few minutes to check it out below. 👇

10 Years Longer. 10 Years Stronger. 🧡

Jacob Colburn was just 21 years old when he opened O-Town Iron in his hometown of Oshkosh February 2018. What began in a 4,000-square-foot space has since grown into a 10,600-square-foot facility offering 24/7 access, personal and small-group training, nutrition coaching and other services designed....

Sometimes the biggest win isn’t just the result — it’s realizing you’ve got a whole room of people rooting for you.

After just 4 weeks of semi-private training, one of our clients got results that absolutely blew him away.

But my favorite part?

When he shared the news, a whole group of O-Town Iron members started cheering for him. 👏

That’s what this place is about.

We can’t guarantee exactly what your results will look like in 4 weeks.

But we can guarantee you’ll walk into a community of people who want to see you win.

And if you’ve been thinking about starting but you’re nervous, intimidated, or worried you’re “not a gym person”…

Take this as your sign.

You don’t have to be in shape to start.

You just have to start.

Your life can look a whole lot different a few months from now — but Day 1 has to happen first.

DM us “START” and we’ll help you take that first step. 💪

"My father-in-law died of a heart attack at 65. He was a three-pack-a-day smoker and a drinker. I’m 64. I had smoked ci******es since I was 15. I started with what I could get away with and eventually got up to about a pack a day. I also drank. I wouldn’t drink at home, but going to the bar was my social time. And when I drank, a lot of times I drank to excess.

Last September, I got sick. They thought I had pneumonia, and I ended up in the hospital for two and a half weeks. While I was there, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.

That’s when I thought, I need to do something different. If I don't, I'm going to die.

So on Sept. 19, 2025, I quit smoking. I quit drinking. I haven’t had one cigarette since. It was really hard. Even today, I think about smoking. It’s an addiction. If I get the urge, I’ll get up and walk around. I’ll do something on my phone. I try to distract myself.

With drinking, I had to make up my mind that I just wasn’t going to do it anymore. I don’t even really want to go into a bar to eat because when I see people having fun at the bar and shaking dice and doing what we do in Wisconsin, I want to join them. I’m really social. I like to talk to people. So I don’t even want that temptation.

Next year I’m going to be 65, and I’m like, I don’t want what happened to my father-in-law to happen to me. I have two children and six grandchildren. I’m married, and I have a beautiful wife. I want to share time with them. I want to be able to do things with them as I get older.” (1 of 2)

(Grace's Note: When I sat down with Rick, I didn't expect our conversation to go here. But I'm grateful he was willing to share such a personal part of his life. I know Rick isn't the only one with a health journey worth sharing. If you've faced a health challenge that changed your life, share your story in the comments. You never know who might need to hear it.)

A devastating tornado hit Menasha. O-Town Iron is raising funds by selling day passes for $10, with 100% of proceeds going to United Way of the Fox Cities. Help us reach our goal of $2,500 to support our neighbors.

You do not have to feel confident before you walk through the door.

Feeling nervous, self-conscious, or unsure where to begin is more common than most people realize.

The problem is not that you are too out of shape. Sometimes, you just need a place where you can ask questions, learn the basics, and build strength without feeling like you have to prove yourself.

At 𝐎-𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧, starting is not about keeping up with everyone else. It is about getting the guidance you need and moving forward at your own pace.

You belong in the room, even if you are just beginning.

“I’ve already lived that life. I had all the fun I needed to have. Now I’m going to live my life the other way. That’s why I’m here.” —Rick Phillips

So many people think getting healthier means giving something up. Rick sees it differently. He’s choosing to invest in the next chapter of his life—one where strength, health, and longevity come first.

It’s never too late to decide that your best years are still ahead of you.

Always learning. Always growing.

Last week, Jacob and Ethan headed to Arizona for a Gym Owner Growth Summit, where they connected with other fitness professionals, learned from industry leaders, and brought back new ideas to help make our gym even better.

We’re committed to growing—not just as a business, but for our members. We can’t wait to put everything we’ve learned into action!
