The U.S. Coast Guard has launched the National Recreational Boating Safety Survey, a nationwide effort to better understand how people boat, paddle, rent, and recreate on the water.
Randomly selected Vermont boaters may receive an invitation letter now through February 2027. Your participation helps improve safety on our waterways.

Our game wardens are reminding Vermonters to use good judgement and put safety first when heading out onto the ice this weekend!

Things are warming up and ice conditions can change fast with weather like we're forecasted to get over the next few days. Plus, even on the same body of water the ice may not be uniform, and the late season tends to exacerbate those spot-to-spot variations. So if you're going out this weekend, bring safety gear like self-rescue picks, test the ice as you go with a spud bar, and make sure to let someone know where you plan to be and when you plan to return to shore. And as always, the wardens appreciate to hear from anglers what ice conditions are like in your area when they stop by to check licenses. Let them know what you're seeing!

With all the ice fishing activity today to north and south of Lake Champlain Bridge, in the Chimney Point State Historic Site area, time for the annual winter share of this historic photo. It's of ice fishing on Lake Champlain, with the Chimney Point building in the background, before the Lake Champlain Bridge was built. Two happy ice fishers and a dog, and a good looking catch on the ice. Expert ice fishers could tell us what kind of fish they are?
