Orrville Falls to Jefferson Area in District Semifinals

Orrville was on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline this past Tuesday, ending what was a remarkable and standard setting season for the program. Rather than just a recap of the game, a recap of the season is in order as well.

Congratulations to Jefferson Area (18-5-1) on a hard fought victory in a game that was tight for its entirety. The Falcons jumped on the scoreboard early with two sacrifice flies in the early half of the game. Orrville, as it has all year, fought, and despite letting early run scoring opportunities go by, tied the game at 2 all in the Bottom of the 6th. 2 more runs in response from the Falcons, along with numerous hit-robbing defensive plays throughout the game, proved to be the difference.

This season will not be defined by one game, but by 18 young men who came together in late February with the goal of avoiding another “average” season. This season saw leaders emerge, players shine, and a culture be developed that was about “we” rather than “me”.

Of course, this all starts with a senior class that led the way. Some, like Cameron Kraft, Kellen Wayt, and Hunter Adkins, had been fixtures in Orrville lineups and fielding setups for all 4 years, but reached new heights this season relying on their experience. Brendon Boss, Caleb Carter, Caeleb Snyder, and Blake O’Quinn all had varsity experience heading into this year, but really found their groove this season. Those seniors provided important contributions that anyone who watched them develop over the years knew they were capable of; really solidifying pitching, fielding, and the Red Rider lineup, in their varying roles. It is not hyperbole to say that the group of seniors who walked into this program in 2023 truly left it in a better place than they found it.

They’ve also set the challenge for the next classes coming through. In 4 years time, what will you leave behind? What this group has left behind is a program where players build each other up, enjoy time together, understand the importance of every role no matter how big or small, & embrace the TEAM aspect behind the wins and losses.

When it comes to a TEAM, I of course am always referring to not just the players, but the entire support system for our boys. If you’re reading this, or any write up from this season, of course I’m referring to you. Whether you supported the team through our spring break trip fundraisers, coming to cheer us on every game, picking up/dropping off, providing pre/post game meals, following on Gamechanger, wishing our boys luck, sharing these posts so they get the recognition they deserve, or just being a positive influence in their lives, thank you for all you’ve done, and continue to do.

Offseasons bring a lot of questions, opportunities, time to reflect, and some uncertainty for sure. One certainty that can be found heading into this offseason is that Orrville, a team that had zero players in the local newspaper’s preseason “Players to Watch” polling, will no longer be flying under anyone’s radar.

The season didn’t end the way we wanted it to but still proud of this team and all they accomplished this season. It wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership of an amazing group of seniors! Love you guys

1 Hit Gem by Kraft Sends Riders to District Semis

Statistical anomalies are an ironic commonality in the game of baseball. Things like a 6-2-5-4 double play, or a 9 run inning, are things that don’t happen often, but when they do, if you’re a baseball fan, you remember them.

Those anomalies were specifically chosen because Orrville saw both in box scores this season. Another anomaly can be found in Orrville’s current season stats. Senior Cameron Kraft toed the rubber today in Orrville’s postseason opener, and held Canton South to 1 hit, and 0 runs, in a complete game shutout. The anomaly comes in his season stats after today, where he lowered his ERA to 1.34, and his batting average against to .134. A rare stat line that underscores the senior’s excellence this season.

When Orrville’s bats were looking for a breakthrough to support their hurler, Case McDaniel doubled with one out in the 5th, eventually being singled home by Kellen Wayt. Case had 2 hits on the day, and made a huge impact defensively, highlighted by a very difficult game sealing catch on a short pop fly that threatened to extend the game beyond the top of the 7th.

After the game, Paula Schmid, daughter of Fleet B. Brenneman, was kind enough to speak with the team and treat them to ice cream following the victory. Paula is a phenomenal woman who, along with her family, have been long time supporters of the baseball program. Thank you Paula!

Orrville’s next opponent is the Falcons of Jefferson Area, who will head to Brenneman Field on Tuesday of next week for a 5pm 1st pitch. Come on out to “The Fleet” for what will likely be the last home game of the season!

Quartet of Orrville Pitchers Confound Huskies in 7-0 Win.

In order to begin, it must be noted that this article is being written during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and the Cavs are up 74-61. Long story short, there isn’t time for a history lesson on huskies like had been planned, let’s get into the 7-0 victory the Red Riders secured this evening.

Orrville’s effort today was boosted by 16 baserunners providing ample opportunities for Red Riders batters at the plate, and 4 Red Rider pitchers allowing none for the Huskies of Northwestern.

At the plate, Orrville was led by Jacob Ott and Hunter Adkins both going 2-3 with an RBI, and by senior Caeleb Snyder totaling 3 RBIs in his two at bats.

On the base-path and at the plate, we saw the varsity debut of Aiden Heater, as he scored his 1st career varsity run. Aiden is an incredibly hard worker has a very bright future in both football and baseball, and will undoubtedly be a fixture in the post game write ups of future seasons.

Ian Higgins also made his 2nd varsity appearance, drawing his 1st career walk. Ian’s bat figures to help the Red Riders out in the not so distant future.

The 4 Red Riders pitchers today were nearly untouchable, only surrendering 2 hits, shutting out the Huskies in a dominant display. Standing out was Junior Alex Smith, who closed out the shutout by striking out the side. The junior hurler figures to be a big part of the Red Rider rotation next season.

83-69 Cavs at the end of the third.

Orrville will open its OHSAA Tournament play on Thursday as they host conference rivals Canton South at Brenneman Field.

SENIOR NIGHT ENDS IN 7-5 VICTORY OVER DALTON

This senior class has grown a great deal over their 4 years in the baseball program, and tonight’s effort was a great example of that growth.

Last season, Orrville was riding high as winners of 7 out of 8 before heading over to Dalton, and suffering a frustrating loss. The team left opportunities on the field, and felt like they let one get away from them.

364 days later, Orrville took on a red hot Dalton Bulldog squad that refused to go away, but was a far different squad than last years, and that change has of course been led by this senior class.

Tonight, seniors Hunter Adkins and Caeleb Snyder, both pitchers in last year’s Dalton game, had to battle. Both worked out of multiple precarious situations and combined for a 7 inning outing that was enough to get Orrville a hard earned W.

Hunter shined at the plate as well, going 2-3 including a massive 2 run double that put the game permanently out of reach.

Senior Brendon Boss was excellent in the field, gobbling up numerous ground balls that came his way, while seniors Cameron Kraft and Kellen Wayt were excellent in the field and up to bat.

Caleb Carter played very well in the lead off spot today, going 2-4 with an RBI, while Blake O’Quinn held down right field well giving his pitchers peace of mind, while also doing a job at the plate with some impressive bunting skills.

A great win for the team, and thanks to our seniors for all of their hard work that helped our program grow and develop.
