🐢 Did you know? Gopher tortoises are considered a keystone species, meaning their burrows provide shelter for more than 350 other species of wildlife-including owls, snakes, rabbits, frogs, and insects!

These gentle reptiles spend most of their lives on land and can live 40-60 years or more. If you’re exploring Tomoka State Park, keep your eyes open-you can often spot them slowly making their way through the sandy/grassy areas or near their burrows.

If you do see one, remember to admire it from a distance and never feed or disturb it. They’re an important part of Florida’s natural ecosystem, and we’re lucky to share the park with them.

Don’t let the weather keep you away from Tomoka Outpost inside Tomoka State Park. We have covered seating around our building as well as standing room inside along our custom built counter top which overlooks the beautiful Tomoka River. Come chill with us! Grab a beverage and snack and enjoy the view!

The mornings are the best time to explore the Tomoka River. You’ll enjoy cooler temperatures, calmer water, more chances to spot wildlife, and you’ll be back before those typical Florida afternoon showers roll through.

Kayak and canoe rentals begin at 9:00 AM, so grab your family or friends and start your adventure bright and early!

After your paddle, cool off with a cold drink, grab a snack, and check out all the unique local goodies in the Outpost.

Our kayak and canoe rentals begin at 9:00am, and the morning is the perfect time to get out on the river:
• Wildlife is more active
• Cooler temperatures make for a more enjoyable paddle
• You’ll beat the afternoon thunderstorms that are common this time of year

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful paddle or hoping to spot dolphins, manatees, birds, or other wildlife, the early hours are hard to beat.
