There is always more to learn.
Coming to Bahia each year gives us the opportunity to deepen our understanding of capoeira. Not only the movements, music, and traditions, but the Afro-Brazilian culture, history, and communities that shaped it and continue to carry it forward.
Here in Boca do Rio, Salvador, we had the privilege of celebrating with Capoeira Angola Guerreiro De Palmares 1° honoring Mestre Lázaro's 25 years as a Mestre and his 60th birthday, as well as the graduation of over 50 students, teachers, and three Mestres. 💚
These trips remind us how much of capoeira is learned through relationship. Showing up, listening, sharing rodas and meals, asking questions, and spending time together is how we learn.
We are incredibly grateful for the friendships and connections we have built here over the years. These are some of the people who have taught us, welcomed us, challenged us, shared their homes and their culture with us, and impacted our lives far beyond capoeira.
And along the way, they've become family.
We return to Bahia to learn, to reconnect, and to keep broadening our understanding of what capoeira is, and what it can be, with respect for where and who it comes from.
