Preseason is where athletes are built.

A great preseason program is not just about getting “in shape” — it’s about preparing the body to perform at a high level while reducing the risk of injury throughout the season.

The foundation starts with proper mobilization and activation to improve movement quality, joint function, and muscle recruitment. From there, athletes must develop acceleration and deceleration mechanics to become faster, more explosive, and more efficient changing direction.

Isometric training builds tendon strength, joint stability, and body control. Force production training improves an athlete’s ability to apply power into the ground — the true key behind speed, jumping, and explosiveness. Plyometrics then teach the body how to absorb and reproduce force rapidly in game situations.

Core stability and rotational force are equally important. Every sprint, cut, jump, tackle, throw, or strike starts from the core. A strong and stable core allows athletes to transfer energy efficiently and produce power in all planes of movement.

Championship seasons are built long before the first game.
The athletes who commit to the process during preseason are the ones who separate themselves when competition begins.

Speed isn’t just about how fast your legs move — it starts at the hips.

Strong hips = powerful acceleration, better stride efficiency, and more control with every step. Whether you’re sprinting, cutting, or exploding off the line, your hips are the engine driving it all.

Weak hips? You lose force, leak energy, and increase your risk of injury.

Train your glutes. Strengthen your hip flexors. Build stability through your core.

Faster starts. Stronger strides. More explosive performance.

Don’t skip hip day. 💥

It’s been a short time but a long road at the same time. I say this with pride in the student athletes we’re making huge gains in correcting our movement patterns and establishing correct biomechanics in our sport as athletes. I am very proud of these young athletes. They have come a long way!

The more the athlete masters his motor skills, the more he will be able to focus his attention in decisive situations coming from the environment. The less trained he is in managing his technical resources, the more he will need to focus on his own movement and less on what happens in the environment.

Ten thousand hours of practice, before becoming an expert in that specific field or skill. Ericsson, called this process deliberate practice and defined as working on technique, seeking constant critical feedback and focusing ruthlessly on perfecting weaknesses, for practical purposes we can consider deliberate practice and deep practice to be the same thing!

Notice that one of the key points to deliberate practice is to seek constant critical feedback! The problem with this generation is that once a coach, teacher or mentor give some of today’s athletes critical feedback they can’t take it!
You gotta understand the keys of the game to walk through your next door!

Coaching vs Mentoring: although these terms can be and often are used interchangeably FYI they are not!
Coaching is more of a direct approach to helping athletes improve at their sport and overall performance, while as a mentor you have to be a little more involved in their development plan, and provide feedback and guidance into the steps to success. I cannot see how coaches claim to be mentoring by degrading an athletes performance. That break ‘‘em to rebuild mentality is the Stone Age. Kids do not need to be broken psychologically to grow in their development. They need to be built up to be able to withstand the psychological challenges that they will face throughout their careers. Buildup by challenging them and showing progress in their development. Mistakes will occur and as coaches we are to encourage them to make mistakes so that we do not fall into the trap of taking away their creativity.
If an athlete or his parents hire you to help in their development, you have no right in doing your best to tear them down. Do your Job Coach! Build and lead from the front not the back like a slave master! We as a community need to hold these coaches accountable to practice what they preach!

Athletes, learn to celebrate your wins!!!
In doing so, they will become part of your psyche and give you more strength to your identity. This is often called a power up!
Often athletes are too hard on themselves cutting short any real progress. Not realizing how far they have come. That’s why it’s so important to reflect on your progress, give credit to your learning and then you will be able build momentum into building confidence!

Sleep is for the weak!”…probably one of the more common phrases in today’s society, right along with “I’ll rest when I’m dead!” I’m sure we’ve all heard these uttered at some point in our lives the glorification of an 80-hour work week, the grind, Hard Work Pays Off …but does it?
In this edition of “What the Science Says”, we’re going to expand on the most important component of our athlete development protocol: sleep. The National Sleep Foundation suggests school-aged children (5 to 13 years old) should get 9-11 hours of sleep, while teens need 8-10 hours. As a coach, this can be the most frustrating component of your training program, since this is where you have the least amount of control.
But, we’re going to arm you with the data to help you educate your athletes and/or, if you’re coaching youth, to their parents as well.

Quick fact: adolescent athletes who get less than 8 hours of sleep per night have 1.7x greater chance of getting injured (1), which can start a vicious cycle of pain disturbing they’re already poor sleep

Bottom Line
Training is important, but sleep is more so. Your adult athletes need 7-9 hours a night, and your kids 10+. If they’re not getting that, changes need to be made. As a coach, you can only do so much. Empower your athletes with strategies to help get the most out of their sleep. But coach, hold yourself accountable too. If they aren’t getting enough sleep, you can’t expect great things out of them in training. Backing off on your end until they get things under control may just be what needs to be done. Be sure to check your ego on that, because the last thing you want to do is contribute to their already challenging sleep habits. Read the full article
