Here's why duct tape is a really bad choice for trying to repair your horse blanket. It literally doesn't come off, therefore the material has to be cut away. This one turned out okay, but anytime you have to cut away fabric like this, you risk altering the fit of the blanket on the horse.

The solution? Always have 1-2 back up blankets. Remove the ripped blanket from the horse and send it to me for repair. And...put the duct tape down....please ๐Ÿคช

Your friendly neighborhood blanket lady here ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ripped blanket? โœ‹ ๐Ÿ›‘ ๐Ÿ‘ฎ Put down the duct tape! Duct tape may seem like a great way to fix a blanket, but us blanket ladies and our sewing machines loathe duct tape repairs. Not only do I have to pick it off (usually in pieces after being run through the washer), but it leaves an awful residue that our machines HATE. โ˜ ๏ธ Broken needles, ๐Ÿ’€ snapped thread, ๐Ÿฆ birds nesting thread on the underside of the blanket (see photo). In order to avoid all of this, I have to make an extra large patch to place over a very small tear to avoid run over the duct tape goo. Without the duct tape, this would have been a $10-$15 repair. With duct tape, it's a ๐Ÿ’ฐ ๐Ÿ’ต $30 repair.

So what's the solution? I get it. It's the middle of winter and your blanket is ripped. The only good solution I have is to always have 1-2 back up blankets. From there, call me! Winter isn't nearly as busy for me, so I can generally get blankets turned around in less than a week.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk! โœŒ๐Ÿป

This is why it is important to waterproof your turnouts yearly! Yearly waterproof helps to extend the life of your blankets and slow the breakdown of the inner waterproof membrane. Once that membrane looks like the picture below, your blanket is toast.

Whether it's with me or another blanket professional, I urge you to not skip out on yearly waterproofing that generally runs $20-$30 per year vs buying a new blanket sooner than you wanted to.

There's a lot of steps in servicing horse blankets that most people aren't aware of.

Did you know that the edges of a tear on a turnout should be burned prior to repair?
