Our All-star tournament for the 2012 season has come to an end. Thanks to all of you for showing up and staying positive. Hopefully we'll be back next season as the 11U NYB Brawlers. Pony is talking about some changes to Select that I think may help Select become more successful. We had difficulties with games this season and the changes would allow kids to play Rec M-Sat and Select on Sunday. For those of you that still want to play baseball or 2012 I'm kicking the idea around of contacting the Star City folks to see if they would like to form a 10U team. The NYB Rec All-stars have about 5-7 players that are interested. I think we'd have 1 or 2. If you are interested please let me know. I sent an e-mail to everyone so please read it. I'll be contacting everyone about the end of season party soon. Thanks for a great season!

May 24: We had our last game against the Natomas Youth Baseball Rec teams today. The boys played well. Yesterday at practice and before the game we talked about keeping our intensity high regardless of who our opponent is, Rec, 12U, or Select. That is something the boys did not due on Tuesday and almost paid for it with a loss. Each player stepped up and played well. The Yankees played tough and were able to hit and generate runs off on one of our better pitchers. JT and Joe hadn't pitched in a while since we have not had a 12U or Select opponent and did well. Ramon also pitched well. The Yankees played solid defense and were able to turn almost every infield hit into an out. They were a tough team and we really enjoyed playing them. Our next couple of games will be against 12U teams.

Thanks NYB for giving us the opportunity against the Rec teams. We kept all but 1 game close and several games came down to the final innings where the game was within 5 runs or less. It was good for our boys to fight through close games in the last inning, work on secondary leads instead of stealing bases on almost every pitch, read balls in the dirt to the catcher, and having to work on batting in runners from 3rd instead of taking advantage of passed balls. Hopefully we'll get to play the Mustang All-Stars after the season is over, which should also be a great game. Awesome job NYB Rec Mustang Teams!

May 22: The Brawlers played the Rec Natomas Youth Baseball Mustang Bats today. The game ended in a tie. Quincy started things off after having not pitched for a few weeks. After an inning he started getting into his groove. Our bats were not with us today. A few kids swung at pitches outside of the zone with 0 or 1 strike and it resulted in easy infield plays. We had one homer but not a lot of base hits. We talked to the kids all the time about batting approach and what pitches to look for with 0 or 1 strike. Some kids are still swinging like it was day 1 and have no game plan and/or bad technique. The remedy for bad technique is to drill at home what we practice on Wednesdays. I can tell who is practicing at home and who isn't since I do see improvement in technique by most players. Another thing that didn't help was base running. We stress to the kids base running techniques but let them know that they have to want the next base. For some kids the coaches still have to say go, which eliminates the surprise factor. At this point in the season the boys should be able to read heels and go on their own when they get the steal sign. Also as a team the coaches can't get the kids to slide. A few times yesterday I yelled dirty at 2nd and kids are coming in standing up. Our team was flat today as a whole and it showed in the way we played today. All the Rec teams we are going to come up against want to step up and beat the Select teams. Today the Bats stepped up as a complete team for the entire game and we didn’t, it was that simple. Our kids have to step up each and every game, regardless if it is rec or a 12U team. When we play the older 12U boys our boys want to play well and step up and in the end we have some of the best games against the older teams. We, as a team, need to have that same drive and intensity when playing Rec as we do when playing 12U teams. We’ll talk about that today at practice. To finish off the game Jacob came in with bases loaded, the winning run on 2nd base and held the game to a tie. Let’s clean it up and get ready for the NYB Mustang Yankees on Thursday. We’ll have JT back but Jordan will still be out at his 5th grade trip. Next week we'll have the 12U RBI Pirates and the following week the 12U Antelope Fighting Irish playing us at home. I'm also trying to get another game with the Golden Eye 12U Red Sox and squeeze that game in next week or the following week.

May 15: We had a pretty good game today. We hit well and were in control of the game the entire time. We came up against a team that struggeld a bit with pitching. This produced a lot of walks and strikes down the middle of the plate and eventually it turned into a lot of runs. Ideally when playing rec I like the keep the games a little closer but we couldn't do much about the runs generated off of walks and loading the bases. We, as a team, need to focus more on baserunning. Most boys didn't turn well at first when a ball was hit into the outfield. We'll stress baserunning at our next practice. Also there were some infield errors due to players not ready to receive the ball. When playing a team that isn't hitting well the players need to stay focused and always think the ball is coming their way. We cleaned it up a bit in the later innings. We got another win under our belt and it was good to see the bats come back.

May 12: The Natomas Youth Baseball 10U Brawlers played a tough 9u SV Strom team this Saturday in a double header. In the first game the Storm took advantage of every error we made while at the same time making none of their own. Our pitchers did a good job but we just couldn’t get an out. Our top of the lineup struggled against the Storm's pitching. The 9U team hit every corner of the plate for many strikeouts looking. Our coaches have been talking to the team about batting approach especially with two strikes and after the first game's batting performance we know that this is something we need to continue to work on. In the second game we did a lot better. Jordan kept the game close and got a bunch of groundouts and fly outs but key grounders and fly balls that we normally catch were misplayed or dropped for errors. We haven’t had a bad game all season and this was our first bad day. We didn't do horrible but when you come up against a solid team things get bad quickly. All the coaches were excited to see the bottom of the line-up step up and make the Storm earn outs. The SV program is a great program and I hope to see NYB Select get there. This is our first year so we’ll have to work through some lumps and bruises...

Today the Natomas Youth Baseball 10U Brawlers played the 12U Antelope Fighting Irish. The Brawlers had the game in the bag until the last inning. We started the first inning off by going through the lineup and scoring 5 runs. We tacked on a couple more and were leading by 6 going into the last inning. That's when the Fighting Irish got hot. They hit the ball and forced the boys to make plays. We made a bunch of errors and at the same time had excellent pitching. JT was on fire and got ground balls and pop flys. We just couldn't convert them into outs. The final scrore was 7-10. It was a good learning experience for the boys. Today's loss taught the boys that we need to field, throw and catch to finish off an opponent. Next up SV Storm 9U for a double header this Saturday at 3pm, Rio Tierra.

We played the Natomas Youth Baseball Mustang Tigers yesterday. The game was very close. Our team did not seem as fired up as they were on Sunday. In between innings we talked to the kids and let them know that we need to play with the same intensity when playing a travel team, 12U team or a rec team. That next 1/2 inning they played good but went back being too relaxed. When there are a lot of walks which tends to cause a lack of focus with the rest of the team. The coaches wanted to have the pitchers work at getting out of the inning so left the pitchers out there to fight. At practice today we'll talk about staying intense and focused regardless of lots of walks. We had a few baserunning errors, ran into potential outs and slid when there was no play at a base. We'll work a little on baseruning today at Rod's. We have a big game against 12U Antelope on Thursday and we need to get back to being intense and focused. We had a good first and last inning, the bats were on fire. In the final inning we scored 5 and held on to the lead for the win! Brawlers win 14-9. Thanks NYB Tigers for a great game. It was down to the wire and tied going into the final inning.

Today we played the Loomis Pirates 10U Travel Team in Loomis. The fields were beautiful and the weather was perfect for a couple games of baseball. The boys got better with each inning played. Players that struggled in the first game did better in the second. Those that did well in the first game did better in the second. What I like about today was that I saw progress from inning to inning by everyone. Great work boys! Today we had the best 2 games we played so for this season!

Good game today against the Orioles. Jacob and Riley pitched well. The Orioles played tough and gave us a good fight. They forced us to make plays. We talked to the boys after the game on things we saw in the game. Things we did well and things we need to work on. It's all about learning and improving our kids and their understanding of the game of baseball. The final score was 10-3, Brawlers.
