Rain stopped in So Cal so I could finally get some gloss on the tiki board. It's now got a full time job leaning against the backyard wall.

Max Reinecke in Germany built our 8' 6" Funboard using all paulownia. He modified the shape a little and made the board 8'9" long and 22 1/4" wide. He then glassed it with 6 oz cloth (2 layers on the bottom and 1 on the deck). He also installed a single fin and GoreTex vent. The board weighs in at a respectable 9 pounds! Max will take the board for its initial rides in France this week. Nice work Max!

Fred Paddock of Pinkerington Ohio made the most of the COVID shutdown. He ordered plans for our 9' 8" Trestles Cruiser and built this beauty. This board was inspired by the Harbour Trestles Cruiser of 1960's fame and will make the most of any lake wave conditions. Great looking board Fred.

Here's a collage of pics taken on Lake Michigan. Usually when I get an order for plans to Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, - even Indiana and Ohio, they are for SUPs to cruise rivers and lakes. Imagine, gnarly fresh-water waves with no sharks or snow on the beach! C'mon, what are you waiting for? Build a real surfboard.

Today's history lesson: back in 1963 there were a growing number of custom surfboard makers and you could actually get a beautiful custom surfboard from big names like Velzy, Jacobs, Hobie, Con, Gorden Smith, Harbour, Yater and many more for right around $100.00. Yup, a hundred bucks! About that time "pop outs" started to appear. They were boards that had been mass produced in molds and usually were sold in big discount stores for about $20 or $30 less than a custom board. The one I'll never forget is the Diwain. It was advertised as "ding proof" and had a little ridge around the rails that supposedly made them indestructible. I never rode one but I have to say I worried that it would ruin my ding repair business. They never really caught on but it wasn't because they didn't spend money on promotion. Check out the ad below. A full page ad in Surfer Bi-Monthly when many of the big names were only buying 1/4 page ads. Truth is these things were logs and dragging one down the beach got you permanently labeled as a kook.

Back in 2010 I was half owner of Wood Surfboard Supply based in Orange County California. That year my business partner, Brad Tucker, and I had a booth at the Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo in Ventura Ca. Our hollow wooden surfboard kits and finished boards were getting a lot of attention from the public - as well as some of the big names in the surfboard business. Rene Yater, Bing Copeland, Bruce Jones to name a few. On Sunday afternoon Tom Morey walked up saying that he saw our kits as a business opportunity. His idea was to buy kits from us, have them built using offshore labor, and sell the finished boards. The picture below shows him talking to Brad about the deal - taking a video of the whole conversation. I think that later it occurred to Tom that making these boards was too labor intensive to be a money maker so the deal never came to be. That's OK, it was very cool to meet Tom and we add our condolences to his family on his recent passing.

Had my annual visit to the dermatologist this morning. He found a few spots on my nose and ears that needed to be frozen but nothing that requires cutting this time. We didn’t have good sun screen back in the day. We do now so don’t forget to use it.
