This last few weeks have been the longest I've ever been out of the water, not teaching, since I became an ISR Instructor in 2008.
It's not that I don't take time off or for myself, it's that my time with my students is for me. Truth be told, it's my personal get-away. When I'm teaching, everything else fades away. I absolutely LOVE it (yes, even with the criers/screamers)!
Warm weather is coming. Pools are opening up and about 250,000 kids that would normally be in some sort of swim lesson right now are not in lessons. That many children are currently not learning what to do if they found themself in the water alone!!!
On top of that, most parents attention is focused on other things. The news, homeschooling, Amazon delivery, planning activities, social media to stay connected and keep adult interaction for our sanity.
Now more than ever, layers of protection need to be a priority.
1. Does the self latching gate to the water work properly?
2. Are the locks and alarms on doors working and being used?
3. Is segmented supervision being followed (clearly communicating who's turn it is to have Constant Eyes On the child)?
4. Are we talking to our kids about water safety?
Drowning is STILL the leading cause of accidental death for kids under the age of five. Is drowning prevention a priority in your household?
It should be!
