Hey! It’s been a minute.. I’m still going through it with my recovery, but slowly getting back to doing all the things I was doing before. This week I’m glad to be back in CA playing with Sac Phil, it feels like a milestone!

This process has been very challenging, but I’ve learn some things. Getting through something difficult like surgery, where there is not another option to get through it than to get through it, makes you exercise a muscle you didn’t even you you had. We cannot avoid the curveballs that life throw at us, but we can learn to navigate them and get stronger in the process, becoming better versions of ourselves.

I’m supposed to have learned something about patience too, but that one is still a bit challenging for me to be honest..but I guess I have learned to respect and appreciate my body. Being my own Pilates therapist in this process meant that I had to take a step back and learn to listen to what my body really needed in the moment as opposed to having an agenda or expectation. The body is smarter than we give it credit for, and as it is healing every cell in the body is doing something, and we need to give it time as well as space to do it’s thing. We need to allow the body to explore movement in a non judgmental way, really appreciating and savoring all the possible movements, which are plenty if we switch the focus from what we cannot do to what we can do. As Ron Fletcher used to say, “Every Body is Beautiful”

Day 18

“By all means never fail to get all the sunshine and fresh air you can.” — Joseph Pilates

After two rough weeks I’m finally feeling some improvement regarding pain. Pain is debilitating physically and mentally, and as the pain is slowly reducing I can feel a shift on my attitude towards this process, which at times feels daunting.

With the bone marrow grafting my hip is going through a process of regenerating bone and cartilage which lasts about a year. The first four months are crucial to keep the joint free of weight and compression.

And what’s making a huge difference is movement. I just started physical therapy to gain movement in the joint, without weight or strength. The joint needs space so it can better regenerate tissue. And also very importantly I started doing some general Pilates movements on the rest of my body, much needed TLC, which makes a huge difference in my overall mood and spirit, which has a big impact on recovery. I must admit is a fun challenge to come up with creative ways to move my body in whatever form is possible!

During the next weeks I’ll be sharing some of those movements with you, so make sure to follow my story

Day 2

The first night was pretty rough, turns out not moving is painful! But today I took my first baby steps with the help of a walker and got to move a bit more which was helpful. Still with a lot of pain as the drugs wear off sometimes.

On a positive note thanks to Pilates I avoided a tenotomy; before the surgery the doctor discussed with me the possibility of having to cut the adductor tendon a bit to help position the leg better. The adductor had gotten so tight due to the pain and compromised mobility that it was pulling the femur a bit out of the socket. So during the previous days to the surgery I made it my goal to do specific Pilates exercises to loosen the hip and worked together with my favorite physiotherapist/osteopath friend Marce. We succeeded! No extra cutting was necessary! Now that I am allowed to move a bit, still no weight on the one leg, I’m focusing on simple movements and stretches to help with the healing process. Amidst the pain movement heals.

Day 1. Surgery ✅ Managing the pain with drugs. Not allowed to get up from bed.

I debated whether or not to share this publicly, but here I am! I recently found out that I needed hip surgery and had to quickly shift gears, rearrange my life and come to Argentina for the surgery. The reason why I’m coming to Argentina rather than the US is a story for another time..but basically I’m doing a bone marrow grafting (mother cell treatment) to help regenerate the joint, which is not super common in the US, and it will take some time to heal.

I want people to know the story of how I got to Pilates the first time, and how Pilates has helped me and continues to. I want people to know that Pilates can help people from all ages and conditions, you don’t have to be flexible, you don’t have to be lean or fit to do this. Anyone can, and the benefits are huge.

I was born with a hereditary hip condition called unilateral hip dysplasia. That’s how I got interested in Pilates the first time; not able to have access to physical therapy when I moved to the US, I looked for different types of low impact exercise and fell in love with Pilates almost immediately. More about that later!

I completed a comprehensive Pilates training by Balanced Body and I became a Nationally Certified Pilates Instructor in 2022, meeting the highest standards in the field. I actually just finished my professional training from Fletcher Pilates which I’m not done processing, and I have more to share about that too!

This surgery was scheduled very recently as my pain increased and suddenly worsened, even though I was maintaining regular movement and going through another comprehensive Pilates program.

I feel so grateful to have family and friends supporting me through this process, it is extremely scary to go through anything with your body, especially when you work primarily with your body, in my case both as a cellist and Pilates instructor. But our bodies are constantly changing and we have to take care of them.

The next few months will be uncertain for sure, with a significant recovery time, but I trust in the skills and knowledge I have been developing for the last 10 years, and hopefully my insight can help others or at least shine a light of optimism and courage on whatever you are going through. If you are interested I would love it if you join me for the ride! I’ll be posting to this story regularly through my insta and fb pages , make sure to follow me there, I’d love to hear from you 🙂
