Grand Opening of the 12 covered pickleball courts at the Sportplex is Saturday, August 10, at 10 a.m.
Because several people have asked, here is a brief summary of Saturday’s event:
🔹The courts will not be available for use prior to the 10:00 a.m. ceremony. That’s to allow for setup and last minute grooming. The ribbon cutting ceremony will feature Mayor Gary Fuller and will likely last no more than 30 minutes.
🔹A big crowd is expected, so plan to get there by 9:30 a.m. for a parking space.
🔹There will be an exhibition match of 4.5 and 5.0 players for all to watch. The participants are: Jarick Rager - Trussville; Sam Wasko - Birmingham; Jim Rogers - LaGrange; and Paul Slay - Knoxville, Tennessee. Should be exciting!!
🔹Plan to play Pickleball after the ceremony! All level of players are welcome. There will be one court for visitors to try hitting the ball and get some basic instructions.
🔹You do not have to be a member of the Opelika-Auburn Pickleball Club or the Opelika SportsPlex to use the courts at any time. Non-members of the club will need to supply their own balls and paddles; although, the Opelika Rec has a few balls and paddles that you may check out at the desk by leaving your driver's license.
🔹We would LOVE for Pickleball enthusiasts and other interested people to join the OAPC! We welcome all ages and skill levels. The cost is $10 per calendar year, which covers the cost of supplying balls to the members. Contact any of the OAPC officers at the courts and they will be glad to sign you up.
