A proud follower sent me a video of her son’s first home run, which also happened to be his first grand slam. She shared that her older son played at Cooperstown eight years ago and never hit one (although he did throw a no-hitter at midnight in the pouring rain!), so watching her younger son have this moment meant that much more. Thanks for sharing, Joy R. Woodson.

It also reminded me of a player on our own team who also hit his first CASV home run/grand slam. It completely changed the momentum of the game, and our team still talks about that major hit.

That’s what Cooperstown does.

It gives players confidence. One home run turns into, “Maybe I can do this again.” As baseball parents, we all know what happens next...they immediately start chasing the next one. My son is already chasing his first home run on a 60x90 field.

Maybe that’s why Cooperstown feels like a week of firsts. First home runs. First grand slams. First Opening Ceremonies. First week away from home. First time bunking with their best friends.

Every family leaves with a different “first.”

One of my favorite things to watch wasn’t the pin trading itself.

It was hearing kids walk up to each other and ask…

“What team are you on?”

“Wanna trade?”

“Team pin for team pin?”

Five minutes earlier, they were complete strangers. Five minutes later, they’d made a trade, wished each other luck, and headed off to the next one.

I love how pin trading at a baseball tourney gives kids an easy reason to talk and connect.

Funny enough, my son traded a few pins and then quickly lost interest… so guess who picked up where he left off because there was no way we were going home with all those pins? 🙋🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

With 12 fields going at once, baseballs seem to come flying from every direction. Sure, foul balls keep you on your toes, but it’s the home run balls that really get everyone moving.

By the middle of Game 1, you’ll see the feral siblings taking off the second a ball leaves the bat. Then the parents start pointing, the grandparents cheer them on, and before you know it, half the crowd is watching the ball instead of the game.

This is your reminder to keep an eye on the little ones, the grandparents, and everyone around you, because you never know where the next baseball will come from (even from a nearby field!).
