On Saturday, July 4th, 2026 fifteen of our dojo’s students joined Sensei Brooke and braved a hot and humid day as they participated in Oneonta’s Independence Day Parade and then performed a forty-minute long demonstration in Neahwa Park. Yesterday, one of our dojo’s students, Douglas, was fortunate to get the opportunity to train with Sensei David Jones while on vacation in North Carolina. He got to do karate, weapons (Tekko & Sai), and Batto-Do in a marathon 2 ½ hour session. Douglas was thrilled with the training and later described the experience as “GREAT”. Our dojo participated in the Genbu-Kai New York Seminar Weekend from March 27th – 29th. The weekend featured Sensei David Jones, from North Carolina, who shared his knowledge of karate-do, kobu-do and batto-do with all of those who attended. A big THANK YOU to Sensei Jones as well as to the instructors who came in for the weekend from other states to participate and help teach the seminars: Sensei Adam Segal (GA), Sensei William Nehlsen (NJ), and Sensei Chad Assid (PA). Our dojo also wants to thank Sensei Cindy Maricle (NY-Norwich), her family and her dojo for the tremendous amount of work they put into making the weekend happen. Domo arigato!

Getting caught up on posts…..Back in February, Sensei Brooke traveled to Cailfornia for the Hombu Dojo’s yearly seminar / tournament weekend from the 19th – 22nd. Sensei Brooke attended all eight seminars and competed in the Batto tournament. She won third place in kata (san dan & above mixed division) and second place in cutting (women’s sho dan & up division).

On New Year’s Eve a group of our dojo’s students joined Sensei Brooke on stage at Oneonta’s First Night celebration and put on quite a show! Here is a short slideshow of some of the highlights. Due to the impending snow storm and the Southside Mall’s 4:00 pm closure today, tonight’s karate classes at our dojo are cancelled. Everyone stay home and stay safe as five to ten inches of snow is expected. We hope to see everyone in the dojo tomorrow for classes as usual.

Merry Christmas to all! No White Christmas in Oneonta this year but a Winter Weather Advisory from 1:00 pm tomorrow afternoon (Friday, December 26th) through 10:00 am Saturday, December 27th may drop several inches of snow. The weather may necessitate the cancellation of tomorrow evening’s karate classes. Stay tuned.

A group of our dojo’s students traveled to Norwich today to compete in a kata challenge tournament. Students learned what it was like to perform kata in a competitive environment and had a lot of fun doing so, and their hard work and preparation for the tournament showed as many of our student competitors medaled. Our dojo sends out a big THANK YOU to Sensei Cindy Maricle and her dojo for hosting the event and for their wonderful hospitality. What a great day!
