Must read, you can help resurrect a legend. Broome is now filled with positivity.
Let’s talk about Broome Tioga Sports center and the decline and new resurrection of a once great mx facility. Broome Tioga has a long history in motocross. It hosted 28 Nationals spanning from 1979-2006. Tom Hurd and family started running the track in 1983. After selling the National to Freestone TX for a very large amount in 2006 the track has been on a steady decline. New owner Damien Cornwell has vowed to make Broome great again!
Broome Tioga has always been a rocky track by nature, if you don’t believe us just ask the GOAT Ricky Carmichael. Arguably it was Ricky’s least favorite track. During the decline the rocks multiplied, the soil degraded, and very little soil maintenance has happened. The overall layout is very good and has so much potential. The start lacks just about everything except a functioning gate. You leave a concrete pad onto what seems to be a bedrock base. It’s not tillable or plowable. It hasn’t always been this way, my guess is that over the years of decline the soil decided to go elsewhere like much of Broomes patrons.
This was one of our favorite tracks despite its decline. We like the soil eventually chose to go elsewhere. In recent years the attitude at Broome seemed to decline faster than the soil. Races being canceled last minute because of low turnout after you’ve driven hours to get there. Poor customer relations was the straw that broke the camels back for us. Despite the tracks decline I think many of us would have stuck it out if it wasn’t for the poor customer relations and a grumpy disrespectful environment. At times it seemed hostile. I don’t want to take anything way from the folks that cared because there were folks at Broome that sincerely seemed to care. Jerry Roys always had a smile, worked hard and ran the gate plus raced several motos. He’s a man of many hats that’s for sure. TP never had anything bad to say and always gave it his best.
The scrap and garbage at Broome also accumulated like rats in a city sewer. Like a m**h addict hitting rock bottom Broome has two basic paths. To fizzle away into history and dissolve into nothing or to evolve into a bigger legend than it ever was. Legends evolve and I’m confident after our last visit that is exactly what Damien Cornwell has in mind.
We raced there last weekend June 14th. The Scrap and Garbage seems to have mostly disappeared. The facility is coming along. The attitude was positive. The track still needs attention but some things take time. All in all our experience at Broome this past weekend was much better than previous encounters. Friendly faces, hospitality, positive vibes all filled the air. Damien is receptive to input. He welcomes solutions to problems that might arise, he welcomes constructive feedback and he welcomes the motocross family.
He is building a home for all of us.
If you have left Broome to never return because of attitudes, declining conditions, and poor turnouts do yourself a favor. Return like we did, I already see changes and god willing this track will once again thrive. Damien can’t do it himself, it takes an army. Start showing up to the gates, let’s bring the numbers to keep this track alive. We have a lot of hard feelings ourselves but Damien and Broome Tioga deserve one more chance.
