Our teams get to see parts of Aconcagua that many climbers never will. When we climb Aconcagua, we use the 360° Route: More obscure, less crowded, and a unique path to the summit that combines the best parts of four other popular routes on the mountain (The Polish Glacier, Normal, Guanacos, and Ameghino). Climbers spend roughly six days stocking progressively higher camps before the summit bid, a long, demanding process that culminates in a day that tests our teams and, more often than not, rewards them.

Alpenglow Expeditions is growing!

For over two decades, we’ve worked hard to create the best mountain adventures on the planet, from backcountry laps in the Sierra to rapid-ascent expeditions on the highest peaks on Earth. Now, we’re bringing on two new leaders to help us keep delivering the Alpenglow experience to our team members around the world.

Sierra Operations Manager: This person is the engine behind everything we do at home. From winter backcountry to spring ascents on Shasta, summer rock, and the Tahoe Via Ferrata, this role owns program growth, guide deployment, and partnerships across our home mountains. California is home to some of the best mountain sports on the planet. If you’re excited to help people go play outside in the Sierra, this is the coolest way to do that at scale.

International Operations Manager: This person will be the operational backbone of our international program. They’ll own program design, guide standards, and our international operator relationships around the world. Their job will be making sure every expedition, from acclimatization to the summit, runs at the level our clients and guides expect. If you’re an IFMGA/AMGA guide, or have deep experience managing expedition operations, this could be a perfect role for you.

This is what last week looked like for some Alpenglow team members. Look familiar?

The team explored the best skiing Cerro Castillo has to offer.

On a regular trip, poor conditions like rain and high winds might bring a ski day to a complete stop. But with guides that are experts in Patagonia’s terrain, the team was able to go to the areas with the best conditions and get in some beautiful turns, even when the weather wasn’t cooperating elsewhere. The flexible itinerary of these expeditions means more time skiing and less time waiting for the weather to change.

When they weren’t IN the mountains, they were admiring the mountains, experiencing the incredible beauty that Patagonia is known for.

The skiing is amazing, the vistas are unmatched, but what people tell us again and again is that the community built on these expeditions is one of the very best parts. Shared meals are one of the best places that community building happens.

Why you need experience on the Ecuador Ring of Fire ski expedition:

You’ll ski steep, technical terrain up to 45°, with conditions that can change dramatically.

You’ll travel across glaciers, using ropes and crampons to navigate crevasses and exposed terrain.

You’ll spend long days at high altitude, including 7–11 hour summit days on Cayambe and up to 10–14 hours on Chimborazo.

Finally, you’ll need to ski confidently in variable conditions.

Summit day on Orizaba starts at 2 a.m.

Much of the day looks like this: slow, deliberate steps and breath over glaciated terrain before finally gaining the summit at 18,491’.

But the potential to summit 2 dormant volcanoes is just one piece of what makes our Volcanoes of Mexico expedition unique. The route moves through the remote, authentic highlands where these volcanoes rise, and splits time between comfortable lodges and nights at high camp. Rest and altitude, balanced, so climbers arrive at summit day ready. It’s a side of Mexico most travelers never see, and an expedition you can join without prior technical experience.

We run this expedition every year over the December holidays, so it takes even less time off to to go on a potentially life-changing adventure.

Aconcagua, seen from the air.

Taking time away from family and work for an expedition isn't easy, so we use helicopters to get the most out of our time on the mountain and away from home.

Flying from Penitentes to base camp cuts out days of trekking and leaves our team members with more energy to put toward climbing. The lift down at the end of the trip is also one of the most beautiful helicopter rides in the world.
