As far as tournaments go, the Gold Cup has been a bit of a let down. For those interested in the young players coming up or established players getting a shot at the national team, then it has been perfect. But the tournament itself marks an important step in USMNT history. All the pressure was on this squad to win the tournament without excuses. And tonight they play for the title.
Mission accomplished so far. The final step tonight must be taken. Jamaica has played with a defensive posture and lack of finishing skill throughout the tournament. I believe they have been lucky to win in their past two matches, but here they are set to take on the USMNT for the Gold Cup trophy.
Bruce Arena has brought on players most soccer fans have never heard of, and honestly may never hear of again. But he has navigated the squad to the title match, and deserves credit for that. However, the USMNT is a large favorite in the match tonight and must take home the title to walk away with any positive momentum. If they lose you will hear, "Well it wasn't that important." But this will be a continuation of the same old same old excuse ridden under performance we have become accustom to.
Bottom line, I'm ready for the Gold Cup to be complete. The quality of soccer has not been up to International standards. The highlight of the tournament was the introduction of Kellyn Rowe, and a few other players we were never introduced to due to the lack of qualification for the Olympics.
