The Tragic Murder of One of Racing’s Biggest Legends🥺

There’s race car drivers that are legends and then there’s guys like “Black Jack” Jack Boggs.

Out of Grayson, Kentucky, Boggs wasn’t just locally known, he was a proven winner at the national level. Long before social media, he built a resume that stacked up with the best of his era:
🏁 National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee (2001)
🏁 400+ career feature wins

And when the big checks were on the line, he delivered:

🏁 3× North/South 100 winner (1986, 1992, 1994)
🏁 3× Hillbilly 100 winner (1985–1987)
🏁 1986 National 100 winner
🏁 5× Spring 50 winner at Florence Speedway
🏁 3× Ralph Latham Memorial winner

Championship resume:
🏁 2× STARS Series Champion (1985, 1988)
🏁 1984 All-Star Circuit of Champions Champion
🏁 27 STARS Series wins
🏁 20 Speedweeks wins
🏁 Wins across STARS, NDRA, UDTRA, UMP, WoO competition

“Black Jack” wasn’t just a regional guy back then padding stats, he was a nationally respected winner & badass who beat the best on a consistent basis.

But in 2000, his story took a tragic turn.

Jack Boggs was shot and killed in Carter County, Kentucky, in what authorities confirmed was a homicide.

According to court records and case details:
• Boggs was involved in a physical altercation at a residence
• During that altercation, he was shot at close range
• The shooter was identified as Charles Dailey
• Dailey claimed self defense, stating he feared for his safety during the confrontation
• The case went to trial, where evidence and testimony were presented disputing that claim

The jury ultimately found Dailey guilty of murder, and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison under Kentucky law.

Jack’s Legacy🏁

He wasn’t just another racer.

This was a driver who:
• Won some of the biggest races in dirt late model history
• Built a Hall of Fame career from scratch
• Earned respect in one of the toughest eras the sport will ever see

“Black Jack” wasn’t just a nickname, it symbolized an icon of the sport we all love. Even now, his name still carries weight.

Because legends like Jack Boggs don’t fade away, they get remembered forever at every dirt track across the country✊🫡🏁

🏁👇 Who was lucky enough to watch “Black Jack” get it done back in the day?

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Derek Fisher Racing Updates team, Steve’s family, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him during this difficult time.

From all of us at Gunner Johnson Racing, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Steve Kincaid.

I had the privilege of becoming friends with Derek and Steve when I first started racing at a very young age at Richmond. From the very beginning, Steve always treated me with kindness and respect. Over the years, I always looked forward to seeing him at the track he was the kind of person who would help you any way he could, no questions asked.

That’s the kind of man he was.

We’re lifting his family, friends, and the entire team up in prayer—asking for strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead.

Rest easy, Steve. 🏁

I was living a dream and didn’t even realize it. Man I sure was lucky to have grew up knowing him in a way most people didn’t. I miss you Jackie. Rip.

When I Think of Florence Speedway, I Think of Jackie Boggs🥺🏁

Growing up, guys like Jackie Boggs almost felt like mythical creatures. The kind of racers you heard stories about long before you ever saw them in person. See, when I was younger I didn’t get to venture too far outside the area I grew up in, so the only time I ever got to watch Jackie race was if he’d roll into one of the local tracks.

But even before that, I had already heard the stories.

They called him “The Last True Outlaw.”

A character that felt larger than life. A Kentucky stalwart, & an icon to blue collar racers everywhere. When you heard the name Jackie Boggs, it carried a certain weight with it.

When I was younger, I had this picture in my head that Jackie was this tough, mean race car driver. Now don’t get me wrong, he was tough. But the “mean” part? Maybe if you got on his bad side😂👀

I was lucky enough over the years to have quite a few different interactions with Jackie while spending time at Kryptonite and Dave Poske’s Performance Parts. And one thing I can tell you is that even though in pictures he could look mean and menacing, in real life he was just a badass race car driver, one hell of a family man, an incredibly hard worker, and a role model to blue collar racers all across the country who always made time for fans.

When I think of Florence Speedway, I think Kentucky. When I think about Kentucky, maybe it’s just the way my mind works, but when I think Kentucky, I think Jackie Boggs.

I’ll never forget the day. Not for the rest of my life🥺

It was October of 2020. I had rode down to Florence Speedway with Ty Carpenter to do some racing. I had seen online earlier that Jackie Boggs was going to be there that evening and I was pumped. Couldn’t wait to go find him, give him a little s**t, and watch one of my favorite drivers battle with some of the best racers in the region.

But things didn’t go like that that day.

I was standing in the back of Ty’s trailer in the pits, just scrolling through my phone killing time before racing started when I saw the news that Jackie Boggs had tragically passed away on his way to the track😢

I’ll never forget that feeling.

Here was a guy I wasn’t close personal friends with, but someone I had grown up hearing about, watching race, and truly respecting as one of the last real outlaws in this sport. And in that moment I was just completely overcome with emotion. It didn’t even feel real. At first I thought maybe it was one of those fake Facebook posts people make, but sadly it wasn’t.

The racing world had lost an icon.
A giant.
A true badass behind the wheel.
And a hero to many.

Now as we’re on the heels of the 50th Annual Spring 50, and I get ready to head back down to Kentucky, I can’t help but think about Jackie Boggs.

And that’s why for the rest of my life…

Every time I think of Florence, I’ll think of Jackie Boggs

🏁🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLIE SWARTZ! 🏁

Today we celebrate a true legend of dirt racing — Charlie Swartz.

A man who wasn’t just fast on the track, but someone who changed the sport forever. Charlie was known for his innovation, heart, and relentless drive, helping push dirt late model racing to places nobody had imagined before. From engineering groundbreaking race cars to competing at the highest level, his impact on this sport still echoes through every lap turned today.

But what always stood out the most about Charlie wasn’t just the trophies or the championships — it was who he was as a person.
He was humble, genuine, appreciative, and always willing to share knowledge with the next generation of racers. The kind of man who could change the future of racing and still treat everyone like family in the pits.

From all of us at Gunner Johnson Racing, we are incredibly thankful for the road you helped pave for racers like us. Your influence is still felt every time we fire up the engine and hit the dirt.

We are proud to continue carrying the Swartz name and legacy forward — on and off the track — and we look forward to honoring that legacy for many years to come.

Happy Birthday, Charlie.
Your impact on this sport will never fade. 🏁🔥

HB 282 — Troy’s Law — passed the Kentucky House with a 92–0 unanimous vote. That was a powerful moment for the men and women working in the towing industry across our state.

Now we are waiting for the bill to be assigned to a Senate committee, which will be the next step in continuing to move this legislation forward.

This bill is about protecting the towing operators who stand on the shoulder of Kentucky highways every day, helping motorists in some of their worst moments.

We are hopeful it will be placed in committee soon so Troy’s legacy can continue moving forward and help bring greater safety and visibility to the towing industry.

Please keep this effort and the hard-working men and women of the towing industry in your prayers as we move into the next stage.

🏁 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my longest racing buddy — Lucas Crooks Racing! 🏁

From that very first race when we were just kids… to still chasing it today — who would’ve thought we’d still be doing what we love all these years later.

It’s been one heck of a ride, full of memories, lessons, and a whole lot of dirt under our boots.

Hope you have a great birthday, brother — and many more laps ahead! 🏁🔥
