Lucas Tackett #75 of West Carter

Huge congratulations to Lucas Tackett, who has been named the 3rd Region Player of the Year! Lucas is a true leader for West Carter constantly encouraging teammates, bringing energy, and setting the tone in every game. An absolute beast on the field and a dominant force on the line, he’s been unstoppable all season.

Coach Barker on Lucas:
“Lucas is a tremendous football player but an even better kid an excellent teammate and a positive role model for other kids. He’s an extremely hard worker who always strives to be the very best. As the leader of our team, he was always excited to see teammates succeed, and team success always outweighed personal success. He is truly an honor to coach.”

We were on hand for a couple of games this year and what truly sets Lucas apart is his sportsmanship. He was constantly helping opposing players off the ground and always carried himself with humility. At the EKC Championship where West Carter claimed the 8th grade title Lucas went first to console Nicholas County players before celebrating with his own team. That’s character.

Lucas, you are a true inspiration and an outstanding young man. Congratulations and best of luck the rest of the year!

As wrestling experiences rapid growth nationwide, particularly in our region, we are pleased to introduce the Appalachian Wrestling Conference, comprising 9 member leagues for the 2025 season. This development will provide a fundamental framework for youth wrestling and lay the groundwork for middle school wrestling initiatives.

UK King’s Daughters Orthopedics and Sports Medicine is pleased to offer free sports physicals for student athletes ages 13 to 19 starting in April.

Sports physicals will be available at area schools on the following dates:

• Ashland Paul Blazer High School, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 25

• Boyd County High School, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1

• Dawson-Bryant High School, 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 30

• East Carter High School, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 2

• Elliott County High School, 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, April 21

• Fairview High School, 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 2

• Greenup County High School, noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29

• Ironton High School, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30

• Johnson Central High School, 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 9

• Martin County High School, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 9

• Portsmouth High School, 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 9

• Rock Hill High School, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 6

• Russell High School, 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29

• South Point High School, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7

Athletes may only receive physicals at their own school.

Makeup days will be available:

• 9 a.m. to noon Friday, July 11 at King’s Daughters Pavilion, 2000 Ashland Drive, Russell

• 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 18 at KDMS Portsmouth Orthopedics, 1729 Kinneys Lane, Suite 102

Sports physical forms must be completed before arrival in ink with a parent or guardian signature. Forms are available at KingsDaughtersHealth.com/SportsPhysicals.

Physicals will be performed by athletic trainers and orthopedic staff. No appointment is needed. For more information, call (606) 327-0036 or (740) 351-0980.

Sports physicals are not intended to replace your child’s annual wellness exam, which includes a more thorough evaluation of your child’s overall health. These exams are covered by most insurers at 100%. The sports physical can be performed in conjunction with the annual wellness exam at no extra charge.
