Mid-South Ice House has developed a new “Learn to” program focusing on kids who want to learn to play ice hockey. Since skating is a requirement to play hockey, we’ve designed the program around evaluating skating skills and then placing kids in groups, structured to meet their needs. Kids who can already skate will focus more on the game, while those who can’t skate will focus more on learning how to skate. Regardless of how participants are initially evaluated, all participants will receive instruction for both skating and the game itself. As individuals progress, class instruction will be tailored to meet the skill-level he or she has reached. The goal is to prepare kids to play hockey, be that playing in one of our youth leagues or just participating in stick-and-puck sessions or even skating during public skating sessions.
Program Highlights
• Participants learn forward skating, stops, starts, turns, and backward skating.
• Participants learn stick handling, passing, and shooting.
• Participants learn the basic rules of hockey.
• Class is for all levels of skating experience, including no skating experience.

What to expect
Week 1: All participants will be issued skates, a helmet, gloves, and a stick (skates, helmet, and gloves must stay at the facility but the stick may be taken home). All players will receive skating instruction and will be evaluated for proper skill-level placement. Once evaluated, participants will be assigned to groups based on their skill-level. Each group will be led by an instructor. Any time remaining will be spent in those groups.
Weeks 2 – 7: Participants will receive skating and game instruction within their groups. As participants advance they will be exposed to new things, and they might be moved to a different group. Groups might get split-up at times for participation at various stations or for running certain drills.
Week 8: Participants will be evaluated during class. After class, awards will be given and each participant will receive a report card, identifying those skills the participant has mastered as well as those he or she needs to work on.
