What a great day to train! We started with a little general discussion about plays, positioning and rotations. Then we got on the field and did a couple dry runs.

Then we added hitting off a T with fielders and runners. We ran dozens of situations, and had the crew rotating through the different Umpire positions.

I think lots of learning was done, we certainly got our reps in! We were smoother at the end of the day than we were when we started, so that’s a WIN!

Now all we need are some Tournament Games to put this training into use!

Thanks to OOB LL for the use of their field, and the parents, coaches and players for taking time out of their day to help us out. They added a whole new layer to the training!

Today's Play Of The Day involves a well executed 2-Umpire rotation.

Situation:
Nobody on, putting the Base Umpire in Position A (in foul territory and behind the first baseman.) A batted ball that is close to the fair/foul line is hit deep to right field. BU takes a few steps towards the outfield as he tracks the ball. He gets set and sees the ball lands about 20 feet from the outfield fence and is about a foot into Fair Territory.

He signals a Fair Ball (pointing into the field) and turns to watch the continuing action. Batter-runner is already past first base and headed to second. Since BU went out to cover Fair/Foul and Catch/No Catch the Plate Umpire ran up to cover third base in case the runner went there.

The runner DID head to third, and the BU got back into the playing action by heading to cover Home. As he was running Home he called out to his partner "I'm going Home". His partner acknowledged that rotation.

The runner scored (inside the park homerun). Both Umpires gave each other that little smile you do when you've done a good job...

The key to this being a successful rotation was:
Pre-pitch signaling
Ex*****on of assigned duties promptly
Verbal communication
Visual communication

It's always satisfying when training turns into real life!

Today’s Play Of The Day involves Umpire uniform uniformity.

*This one isn’t me!!

Two Umpires were going to work a Baseball game. They discussed meeting up and doing their pre-game. However, neither discussed the shirt color. Ordinarily the Plate Umpire is the defacto “boss” and decides meeting place & time as well as shirt color.

Plate Guy showed up with Light Blue, because it was a warmer night. He assumed Base Guy was also going to be going with Light Blue. When BU showed up wearing his standard Black shirt it caused an oh-no moment. But only for a moment because most of us carry EVERYTHING with us to every game, just in case.

Luckily BU had his Light Blue with him, and it all worked out.

This is a timely reminder as we get ready for All Stars. It’s likely the Umpires assigned to games will be from different towns/leagues, so that text or email the day before will be essential! As mentioned, PU is generally the one to initiate contact. But so long as they have a discussion prior to game day, everything should be good.

FYI - The Softball Schedules are up and running on the D4 Website.

Games are on the "2026 District Tournament Page".

The Umpire Schedules are on the "Umpire" page.

Quick reminder note to Leagues...when posting anything related to games or tournaments - the FB bots are constantly looking for words and phrases like that so they can spam your posts with bogus links. After posting something, go to "Who Can Comment" and select "Established Followers". That will keep them away!

Related to that, any time you have a new Follower, check their profile out (yes, it's almost a full time job, but worth the effort). Any suspicious new Follower - DUMP THEM and BLOCK THEM!
