The secret to longevity is eating high quality whole foods.

I don’t mean Whole Foods as in the store. I mean whole like real food. So… What is a “whole food” anyways?

Whole food will rot, wilt, turn funky colors, spoil, or otherwise, go bad. There are no preservatives to keep it, so it has a short shelf life. If it was alive at one point and has not changed forms substantially, it’s a whole food.

Where do we find whole foods? They actually make it easy… Shop along the perimeter of the grocery store: produce, meats, seafoods, dairy… that’s not to say everything within those departments are healthy, but they are whole foods. Then, cook with healthy fats like olive oil, butter or animal fat (steer clear of vegetable/ soybean oils, etc.), enhance flavors and nutritional values with herbs and spices instead of sauces.

Now, what to do about the other delicious things in life? Take bread for example. I love bread. My problem is that I can’t “unring the bell” of learning that your body treats white bread like white sugar. So I switched over to a sprouted bread. In no way am I saying it satisfies the pallet like a Hawaiian sweet roll, but every ingredient is itself, a whole food. Try Ezekiel Bread in the frozen bread aisle.

So, find areas of your diet that could be substituted with whole foods versions… say you like croutons on your salad. Ok, that’s a crunchy texture, how about swapping for walnuts, toasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds?
Love an evening treat? Freeze some bananas and look up recipes for “NiceCream”…
Can’t live without a morning bagel? Make your own with this easy recipe using Greek yogurt, I like them even better:

This can help with so many things: filling in some gaps with nutrients you weren’t getting, opening the doors of creativity, and helping your taste buds acclimate to less sugary or salty foods. You may even see some results on the scale or in the gym without much real effort. 💪🏼🥦🍓

This easy homemade bagel recipe is made with 5 ingredients – flour, yogurt, egg, baking powder and salt! Oven or air-fryer directions!

As a nutrition coach, one of my goals is help reframe people’s view of what a "diet” is - it is not a restrictive list of foods or period of deprivation. We eat because it’s fuel. Our bodies deserve the best kinds, the right amounts and it’s worth an honest effort. The way I look at it, we can’t leave our health up to our decisions. By 10am, we’re usually so mentally taxed by making choices we can’t trust ourselves. I live my nutritional life by a set of principles so that I don’t have to rely on willpower. It’s reliable, goal-oriented and it accounts for social gatherings and life’s pleasures.

So, let me pose a question…What if our standard American food pyramid was made up of principles instead of general food groups?

This is intended to start a discussion, not impose a new way of life on anyone, so comment below with your thoughts, questions and opinions!

Let me illustrate how I would change it based on my nutritional views:

Nourished Mindset

The Greek myth of Sisyphus

Sisyphus was a cruel Ancient Greek king who was condemned in the afterlife to the eternal task of pushing a large stone to the top of a hill. After reaching the top, he had to watch it roll down to the bottom…
Every…
Single…
Day.
Albert Camus once wrote that he imagined Sisyphus smiling while pushing the rock. As the stone again tumbles to the bottom, Sisyphus doesn’t complain, he accepts the challenge… and his fate.

The moral of this myth - developing mental toughness - has had a lasting influence on me and how I coach. Each of us have a choice: embrace the struggle or despise it.

My Nourished Lifestyle coaching program is more than macro-nutrition and fitness, we train and develop mindset to empower your control over two things in life: attitude and effort. Like Sisyphus, if you learn to fall in love with the process and the journey, it becomes a beautiful and special part of life.

Be well friends!

My passion and profession is my Lifestyle Coaching methodology. Big words, sorry not sorry, but I teach much more than personal fitness or nutrition training, it’s about the BIG PICTURE. It takes time to make a relationship… so it’s the same with your relationship with a nutrition plan and a Coach. It takes dedication and consistency, built around habits and routines.
It’s awkward to be that person who always has their own portioned meals at work, get-togethers and even when you travel. It’s worth it when you show up to an event, beach or pool, or even for yourself in the mirror each morning with the confidence of looking and feeling great.
It‘s not more fun to trade the late night bar scene for going to bed early. It’s worth it when your body recovers and rebuilds you stronger each night.
It kind of sucks to say “No” to the break room doughnuts or candy jar on a really tough work day. It’s worth it when you’re in your doctor’s officer and they say to you “Whatever you’re doing, keep it up”.
We’re shooting for being awesome and fit at 80, tossing grandkids around like basketballs. That takes intention, diligence, buy-in and practice. Most important, it takes a coach to help you build those habits and skills to take with you long after we’re done working together. This is not forever. It is the ‘Master’s Program’ of adulting.
I want you to be my poster child. I want your friends to ask you “You look great, what have you been doing?!” I want to be the name you tell them proudly and I want to work with them too!

Be well everyone.

Hey everyone, awesome news for Ready To Go Coaching!

I'm opening up a few registration spots in my Nourished Lifestyle program. What sets my nutrition coaching apart from other "macros" programs is that it’s relationship-based. I get to know you and where you’re at before I calculate your numbers…

My programs are proven to work for:
* losing weight
* healthier eating habits
* relationships with food
* muscle building and toning.

Do this for yourself. Think about what your life will look like as you make progress toward your goals. Are you happier? More fulfilled? Healthier? Can you play with your kids longer? There are so many ways to measure yourself beyond pounds on a scale. You are more than that… this program will open up how to see yourself in a new light.

The first 5 people to register will receive $100 off a 90 day cycle. $500 is a good chunk of change, I know, but it’s a small price to pay for a lifetime of knowledge and skills you get to keep.

Find me at Ready To Go Fitness & Nutrition. I look forward to working with you.

I’m proud of the programming of this workout, maybe more so than my performance in it, since it’s not time to go full send yet. There’s some elements of a prior Open workout 18.2 and a hint of a Stage 2 workout from last year. Regardless, it was the perfect combo of paced work during sit-ups since you can only go so fast, close-your-eyes-and-go on thrusters, then nut up to the bar and lift some heavy weight.

Time was 8:51. Less than a month to go till I test my fitness, we’ll see! 💪🏻

Wow. The past few months are a blur, but even if I could have written my own life story, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I’m a proud daddy now. It’s the single most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me. Lack of sleep, erratic schedule, and equanimity with my wife’s needs has complicated life, but I’m totally here for it.
I’ve gotten some training in, bolstered my home gym (thank you Black Friday deals) and refined my coaches eye with the help of some local gym owner friends. But it never seems like enough, and that might be an identity I have to let go of for a while, and it’s ok.
It’s a new chapter where I grow to be the best, strongest and fittest I can be right now. Attitude and effort - that’s what I can control and that’s how I’m giving my all.
