The secret to longevity is eating high quality whole foods.
I don’t mean Whole Foods as in the store. I mean whole like real food. So… What is a “whole food” anyways?
Whole food will rot, wilt, turn funky colors, spoil, or otherwise, go bad. There are no preservatives to keep it, so it has a short shelf life. If it was alive at one point and has not changed forms substantially, it’s a whole food.
Where do we find whole foods? They actually make it easy… Shop along the perimeter of the grocery store: produce, meats, seafoods, dairy… that’s not to say everything within those departments are healthy, but they are whole foods. Then, cook with healthy fats like olive oil, butter or animal fat (steer clear of vegetable/ soybean oils, etc.), enhance flavors and nutritional values with herbs and spices instead of sauces.
Now, what to do about the other delicious things in life? Take bread for example. I love bread. My problem is that I can’t “unring the bell” of learning that your body treats white bread like white sugar. So I switched over to a sprouted bread. In no way am I saying it satisfies the pallet like a Hawaiian sweet roll, but every ingredient is itself, a whole food. Try Ezekiel Bread in the frozen bread aisle.
So, find areas of your diet that could be substituted with whole foods versions… say you like croutons on your salad. Ok, that’s a crunchy texture, how about swapping for walnuts, toasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds?
