Sometimes in our rush to be first, we break the first rule of journalism - BE RIGHT! So let's recap yesterday's District 2 Class 2A Girls' Golf Qualifying Tournament, aka, Pre-Districts.

Senior Mia Fox and Junior Kamryn Notari became the first Blue Devil female golfers to qualify for the D2 Girls' Golf Championship. Notari shot 42-46 on the Par 70 Tall Pine Players Club in Friendsville. Her total of 88 was good for third place. Honesdale's Marley Reynolds (86) and Elk Lake's Nami Patton (87) finished 1st and 2nd.

Fox carded a 92, shooting 45-47 on the Tall Pines track, good for eighth in the AA Division.

The girls will now play for the chance to play in the PIAA Class 2A Championship when they go to Elkview Country Club in Greenfield Twp. on October 5 for the District 2 Championship Tournament. Eighteen girls qualified for the D2 Final. The Top 3 District 2 golfers will qualify for the state championship tournament to be held at the Penn State Blue Course in State College.

The Old Forge School District will induct three new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night before the Blue Devils game against Tunkhannock. The ceremony will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Old Forge will enshrine three legendary athletes and coaches who brought notoriety and pride to Old Forge High School and the Borough of Old Forge. Chuck Cherundolo, Elio Ghigiarelli and Lou “Babe” Tomasetti were three men who starred on the gridiron, hardwoods and ball fields for the Blue and Gold before going on to greater fame after high school.

The three new members join Sammy Cavalier and Joseph “GI” Giglio in the Old Forge Athletic Hall of Fame. Cavalier was inducted in 2017 and Giglio was enshrined in 2023.

Lou “Babe” Tomasetti was an all-scholastic football and basketball player at Old Forge High, graduating in 1934 before heading off to Bucknell University. While at Bucknell, he earned three varsity football letters and was named co-captain of the 1938 Bison team in his senior year.

He earned Little All-American Status at Bucknell in 1938 and led the Bison to their last victory over Penn State, 14-0, that same season. He played with the College All-Stars against the Philadelphia Eagles in 1939 and played in the first Blue-Gray College All-Star Game before being drafted by the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers later that year. He played with the Steelers in 1939 and 1940 before moving on to the Detroit Lions in 1941 and the Eagles in 1941 and 1942.

World War II interrupted his pro career, but after three years serving in the Navy, “Babe” starred for the Buffalo Bison and Buffalo Bills in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946-1949. His best season came in Buffalo in 1948 when he led the Bills to the playoffs by rushing for 716 yards and seven touchdowns and catching 22 passes for 213 yards and a score while playing fullback. He finished just 48 yards behind future NFL Hall of Famer Marion Motley for the AAFC rushing crown that season.

He played in 94 games over 10 seasons in the NFL and AAFL, rushing for 1,904 yards and 14 touchdowns and catching 69 passes for 702 yards and five scores. He was inducted into the Bucknell University Hall of Fame in 1995.

Elio Ghigiarelli
One of the greatest football coaches in District 2 history never played football in high school, but was also one of Old Forge High’s most stellar athletes in the mid-1930s. Coach Ghigiarelli was a 1935 graduate of Old Forge High School where he starred as a basketball and baseball player. It is said that he could control a basketball game from his point guard position and a baseball game as an all-star pitcher.

In 1947, he became the head football and head basketball coach of the Blue Devils, and turned Old Forge High into a force both on the gridiron and the hardwoods. On the football field, Ghigiarelli amassed a record of 202-89-27, winning three Eastern Conference Championships, four Eastern Conference Northern Division titles, seven Lackawanna Conference titles and a PIAA District 2 Bowl. Coach Ghigiarelli is also remembered as the first local coach to film games in order to scout opponents and improve his own team. He was a pioneer.

On the hardwoods, he led the Blue Devils for 21 years, posting a record of 303-63 while winning three District 2 titles and eight Lackawanna League Championships. He was named the first UNICO National High School Coach of the Year for 1958-1959 and was one of the first inductees into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

His career at Old Forge High is a storied one. After his coaching career, he served as principal of the Old Forge Elementary School, and in 1987 the school district dedicated its gymnasium as the “Elio Ghigiarelli Gymnasium.” He also served the borough as Mayor from 1969-1973 and in 2004 the Borough dedicated the street in front of the Veterans Memorial Stadium Field House as “Elio Ghigiarelli Drive.”

OFSD Hall of Fame Induction this Friday

The Old Forge School District will induct three new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night before the Blue Devils game against Tunkhannock. The ceremony will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Old Forge will enshrine three legendary athletes and coaches who brought notoriety and pride to Old Forge High School and the Borough of Old Forge. Charles “Chuck” Cherundolo was an all-state football player at Old Forge High and a member of the famous Class of 1933. He went on to become an All-American football player and captain at Penn State University where he excelled at center and middle linebacker.

Chuck spent 10 years playing center in the NFL with the Cleveland Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He signed one of the richest contracts in the NFL when he signed for $250 a game to play for Philadelphia, and in 1941 and 1942 was named an NFL All-Star while playing for the Steelers.

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to the NFL to play for the Steelers in 1945. In his last year in the NFL, he was named Steelers team MVP and a team captain. In 2007 he was named to the Steelers Legends Team and was considered the greatest Pittsburgh Steelers center from 1933-1970.

His NFL career didn’t stop on the playing field. Cherundolo spent 22 seasons as an assistant coach for the Steelers, Eagles, Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears before he retired in 1974. At the time of his death in December of 2012, Chuck was recognized as the fourth oldest living former NFL player at the age of 96.
