This past Thursday, August 20, the Nassau County fire service experienced another series of large scale incidents after a tornado and major rainstorm hit our county. The tornado was the first to hit causing major damage and threatening businesses and homes along the south shore of Long Island near the Atlantic Beach and five towns area.

A little before 7:00 PM Inwood Fire Department Inwood Fire Department received a call at the Sun and Surf Beach club for an automatically alarm as well as a collapse. Fire crews responded to find the damage at the location to be immense. A major technical rescue activation was started, having the technical rescue teams from across Nassau County respond to the location. Additionally, FDNY collapse response was requested as well. The Fire Department’s working at the scene did everything they could to minimize the damage and keep the public safe.

Around 8:20 PM the North Bellmore Fire Department North Bellmore Fire Department responded for a report of wires burning on the roof of a house. A small electrical fire was found and extinguished quickly. A signal 98 (First Engine to Stretch Attack Hose) was transmitted for that incident.

Around 9:10 PM, the Belmore Fire Department bellmorefiredepartment responded for a reported basement fire with an automatic alarm along the South Shore. Upon arrival fire crews located a small basement fire and transmitted a signal 10 (working fire). That Fire was quickly put under control.

Around 9:30 PM, the Jericho Fire Department 𝑱𝑬𝑹𝑰𝑪𝑯𝑶 𝑭𝑰𝑹𝑬 𝑫𝑬𝑷𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑴𝑬𝑵𝑻 was alerted for a reported building fire at the Milleridge Inn. Fire crews quickly responded to find the side of the building on fire, as well as parts of the attic. A signal 10 (working fire) was transmitted and multiple mutual aid departments were dispatched and responded to assist. A signal 12 (under control) was transmitted about one hour later.

The fire service was very busy however, the membership across our departments continued to serve the people of Nassau County all night long. This included dealing with extreme flooding conditions, disabled motorist, as well as all normal emergency alarms in the aggressive rain.

🚒🎓 A Night at the Academy 🎓🚒

Last night on Wednesday, August 20, the Fire Academy hosted its usual firefighter one class as well as a live fire engine operations training.

Firefighter one is a basic firefighting course for the purpose of training interior firemen. In the attached pictures, you’ll see them working on ladder work as well as moving hose. The instructors coach them to be the best they can be and eventually add tools to the ladder climb as well as live fire to moving hose to simulate the reality of firefighting.

Additionally, Lynbrook Fire Department’s Lynbrook Engine Co. #1 participated in an engine operations drill. They were monitored and taught by the instructors on what they did well and what they could improve on to make them even better firemen. They did multiple evolutions and improved each time as we all strive to do.

*** ACTIVE INCIDENT ***

At approximately 11:00 AM this morning, in Lawrence Cedarhurst Fire District on Rockaway Tpke, there was an auto accident leading to an overturned tanker truck leaking. Over 10 fire departments from Nassau county, as well as units from the FDNY, NCPD, and USCG are working to resolve the situation. This is an evolving incident and the information stated here is preliminary.

Please avoid the area whenever possible until the situation is resolved.

Congratulations and a job well done to our 81 youth females in the fire service attending training yesterday at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy.

A special thank you to our keynote speakers for the day. Second deputy Chief Instructor, Christin Rhine, Lakeview Chief, Heather Santi McNeil, Chief, Jessica Crawley of East Norwich, Fire Department and Chief and First, Vice President of Nassau County Fire Chiefs Council Karen Bendel

Each one of you brings a unique motivation to our young females of today.
