Oklahoma City Iaido

Iaido is the art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword. It is one of the oldest traditional sword arts in Japan.

For nearly 450 years, since the founding of iaido by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu in present-day Murayama City, Tateoka, Yamagata Prefecture, this technique has been passed from one generation to the next in an unbroken succession of teachers and students. The Oklahoma City Dojo practices Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido and follows the teaching of the Beikoku Tendai Iaido Kai, the North American branch dojo of the 22nd Soke, Ikeda Takashi-soke. The Oklahoma City Dojo's purpose is to directly transmit all aspects of iaido to the next generation as faithfully and correctly as possible. This includes many elements of both Japanese martial arts and culture, ranging from swordsmanship techniques to traditional dress and etiquette.

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, students of the Oklahoma City Dojo received inkajo (sometimes referred to menjo; certificates of promotion) from Fukui-soke through John Ray-sensei. These certificates serve to mark the hard work and dedication each student put into his/her/their practice. Congratulations to everyone on their hard work and thank you to John Ray-sensei for your continued teaching and help!

This past weekend, OKC Iaido hosted the yearly Beikoku Tendai Iaido Kai’s yearly Koshukai and Shodan Shiken (test). Classes were led by our teachers from the Chiba Dojo in Japan, Tanida Hiroshi-sensei (10 Dan Hanshi) and Chikamoto Kazuhiko-sensei (8 Dan Junhanshi). Students from across the US and special guests from the Canadian Iaido Association also joined us.

Happy New Year from OKC Iaido!

The dojo held its annual Hatsunuki celebration with sister dojo across the globe to mark dedication to continued practice in the new year! Our dojo was fortunate to receive the blessing of Kannagara Inari shrine for this year.

On the evening of December 10, 2025, OKC Iaido performed an embu alongside Kamoai Taiko for Japan Matters for the US at and hosted by .west.center and . Special guests for the panel that evening included Japanese Ambassador to the US Shigeo Yamada and Honorary Consul of Japan in Tulsa, Dewey Bartlett. We’d like to thank the Japan America Society of Oklahoma for providing us this opportunity.

This past weekend, OKC Iaido hosted the 2025 Oklahoma Embukai. This year marks the seventh year of this event since our first in 2019. Students from across Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma City and Tulsa dojo as well as the Stillwater study group were joined by guests from sister schools in Texas and Arkansas for a weekend of study and practice. The weekend concluded with a formal demonstration of students and teachers.

The weekend also included a special promotion ceremony of Ian Weathers, leader of the Arkansas study group.

Students from across the US and Canada preparing for their test in March, 2025. This was a spectacular event and a first for Oklahoma City to host this international gathering—and the first time this event was held outside of Texas.

Today, a long-time project in the works came to fruition as students from the OKC Iaido Dojo added nafuda (name tags) to the nafuda kake at Windsong Dojo. This project would not have been possible without the help of our very own talented wood burner, Natalie, who hand crafted each nafuda.
