Today was one of those days I’ll always remember not just as a professor, but as a father.

Ryan competed in both Gi and No-Gi today and finished the day as champion in both divisions. 🥇🥇

Of course I’m proud of the medals. I’m proud of the victories. But what makes me happiest is watching my son learn the lessons that come with stepping on the mat — discipline, courage, hard work, respect, and how to keep going no matter what happens.

I’ve spent my entire life in Jiu-Jitsu, and being able to now share this journey with my son means more to me than any medal ever could.

Today I wasn’t just his professor standing beside the mat. I was his dad and I couldn’t be more proud of him.

Congratulations, son. Keep working, keep learning, and most importantly, keep enjoying the journey.

Some of the best moments we create with our children aren’t just at home , they happen while we’re learning, growing, challenging ourselves, and spending real time together.

As a father and a professor, one of my greatest joys is being able to share the mats with my son and watch him grow through Jiu-Jitsu.

JIU-JITSU IS ABOUT MORE THAN LEARNING HOW TO FIGHT. 🥋

After decades on the mats, one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that being a professor is about much more than teaching techniques.

It’s about helping people build confidence.

Teaching children discipline and respect.

Helping adults challenge themselves physically and mentally.

Creating an environment where people feel welcomed, but are also pushed to become better.

Every person who walks through my academy doors has a different reason for starting Jiu-Jitsu but my responsibility as a professor is the same:

Help them become better than they were yesterday.

That is the kind of academy I have always wanted to build.

Not just a place to train.

A place to grow.

Over the years, I’ve learned an important lesson , in business and in life:

It’s much easier for a client to become a friend than for a friend to become a client.

Many people who first walked through my academy doors as students eventually became great friends, and I’m truly grateful for those relationships.

But friendship should never replace professionalism. As a professor, I have a responsibility to treat every student with the same respect, dedication, and commitment.

Friendships can grow naturally along the way — and some of my greatest friendships began right here on the mats.

Respect the friendship.
Respect the student.
Respect the profession.
Respect the business.

Because when professionalism comes first, genuine friendships can last a lifetime.

I DON’T JUST TEACH JIU-JITSU. I LIVE IT. 🥋

After decades on the mats, I still train, compete, test myself, and continue learning.

Why? Because I believe that if I’m going to prepare my students for competition, I need to understand exactly what they’re going through — the pressure, the nerves, the preparation, the wins, the losses, and the lessons that come with stepping onto the competition mat.

That experience is something I bring back to my academy and share with my students — from kids competing for the first time to adults chasing their own goals.

For me, being a professor means leading by example.

I don’t ask my students to do something I’m not willing to do myself.

This is more than what I teach.
This is what I live.

NO VICTORY WITHOUT SACRIFICE. 🥋🏆

Sunday is family day — and for us, this is part of what family looks like.

Father and son. Time together on the mats. One more training session. One more opportunity to learn, grow, and prepare for the next challenge.

But this is about much more than Jiu-Jitsu.

As a father, I know that one day my son will grow up, and these moments will become memories. So every opportunity I have to be beside him — teaching him, encouraging him, challenging him, and watching him grow — means more to me than any medal.

I’m not teaching my son that he has to win every time. I’m teaching him that if he wants to accomplish something, he has to be willing to work for it — even when nobody is watching.

Commitment. Discipline. Consistency.

And when the results come, some people will call it talent. Some will call it luck.

They just didn’t see the work that happened when nobody was watching.

The medals are won on competition day.
Champions are built long before that. 🥇

But at the end of the day, the greatest victory for me isn’t the medal.

It’s being his father, being present, and sharing this journey with him. ❤️

JIU-JITSU FOR THOSE WHO SERVE & PROTECT 🇺🇸🥋

I’m grateful for the opportunity to share Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the men and women who serve and protect our communities and our country.

I’m especially proud that our academy currently has active members serving with the Oklahoma City Police Department, Moore Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police, as well as firefighters, first responders, and members of the U.S. Military.

For those who serve, Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art. It develops confidence, control, composure under pressure, and practical skills that can make a difference when they are needed most.

It is an honor to have their trust and to have them as part of our Jiu-Jitsu family.
