A recent article featuring Tom DeBlass talks about his number one piece of advice for academy owners.

And honestly, I think he’s absolutely right.

One thing I’ve always believed is that retention is one of the most important things in martial arts.

The goal isn’t just to get someone to sign up.

The goal is to have that white belt still training years later.

Maybe even long enough to become a black belt.

That’s where real success is.

Whether I’m teaching a small group or a large group, I try to give the same attention and care to everyone.

Because building a successful academy isn’t just about teaching techniques.

It’s about creating a culture.

And culture is one of the most powerful things a coach can build.

The reality is that competitors often have different priorities.

And that’s normal.

When you’re pursuing a competitive career, you have to focus on:

* your training
* your goals
* your next tournament
* your own development

There’s nothing wrong with that.

But running a successful academy requires a different mindset.

You have to think about the group.

You have to think about the environment.

You have to think about how people feel when they walk through the door.

Over the years, I’ve trained and taught in many different places.

Different cities.
Different states.
Different communities.

And one thing I’ve learned is that people can feel the atmosphere of a gym almost immediately.

When new students walk in and see:

* people enjoying training
* teammates helping each other
* a positive environment
* students who genuinely want to be there

that becomes marketing by itself.

You don’t have to convince people.

They can feel it.

The sense of belonging becomes stronger.

And that creates something much bigger than a team preparing for competition.

It creates a community.

A place where people want to improve together.

A place where people support each other.

A place where they actually look forward to coming back.

At the end of the day, techniques matter.

Competition matters.

Skill matters.

But if people don’t enjoy being part of the environment, eventually they’ll leave.

The strongest academies I’ve seen weren’t always the ones with the most champions.

They were the ones with the strongest culture.

What do you think is more important for a successful academy: great instruction or a great community?
