Something new and something old has collided in my short time here on the coast. The old refers to what big trout do this time of year (every year) leading up to the summer spawn, and the new is my understanding of that. The results have been awesome. I’ve managed to stay near these big fish, and have started to figure out how to catch them. I say all of this with humility, and consider it a privilege to pursue these incredible fish. And because I believe I’m truly blessed to do this, I want nothing more than for other anglers to experience the same. The process of “hunting” these fish and then fooling them with lures, appreciating their beauty after the catch and then finally watching them swim off, is nothing but pure joy with plenty of adrenaline spent.

With that said, if I could only share the ONE most IMPORTANT key to finding these fish right now, it is this. Look for obscene amounts of mullet in relatively shallow water from our “front marsh/beaches” all the way to our barrier islands. These are our saltiest waters right now and have the majority of mullet. What do I mean by “obscene?” It’s the visual that causes you to pause or double take, and say, “Dang, that’s a lot of mullet!” When you start looking for them, and start to find them, it will make sense.

And this is WHERE big trout will be. These are mullet eaters, and they like to lounge around the buffet. Using shallow water to bring these big mullet close to the vacuum that is a big trouts mouth.

What is the definition of big trout? Well that varies state to state. But there is no doubt as they climb the length ladder, they look for bigger and bigger mullet. Here in Mississippi, I get excited about 20”s and up. I hope that never changes. Yet, this spring I had the opportunity to bring two 27” six pound trout to the boat and a 25”, 5 pound trout. What an incredible experience, probably only surpassed by 30 trout total over 20”, of which 17 of those were 21” or better, 3 pounds and up. Credit to Heavy Hitters program for adding friendly competition to this journey.

Last but not least, I’ll share much more in the next month in the form of videos and reels of some of the biggest cast to catch fish, and additional videos breaking down the lures and rods/reels I use to fool these fish. Hint….the lures are BIG.

Nothing to teach here, just big ugly fun. If you fish with lures or live bait the battle with a beautiful black drum is only a matter of time away. My son’s drum line was too fun to not record. Enjoy!

Honey Holes.....every waterway has them. They produce fish and hordes of fishermen. But what is it that makes them so great? Could you break that down, and use the "why" of their greatness to find other honey holes? You definitely CAN! But you have to commit to learning the "why" and exploring new areas. In this video I’ll cover some key aspects of a local South Mississippi coastal honey hole.....the "Beau Rocks". And then show you how to apply those details and patterns on a nearby inshore reef.

Also included is a KEY tip for mid-strolling and would very likely work with any jig and plastic combo.

It's almost May on the Gulf coast, and here in Mississippi the wind is starting to let up a little. At least a day here and there for us to take advantage of the big migration of trout moving into our Mississippi Sound. And with that said, boy are those trout moving and eating! I'm sure there are still a few folks catching trout in the bays, but for the most part, the bulk of the adult trout population has at least entered our Gulf waters, and many have made it to our Barrier Islands already. If you have a boat, find the natural or man-made reefs in your area. We have them up and down our coast. There is a collision of trout and menhaden (pogies) happening with the trout moving out and the pogies moving in. That slaughter takes place on our front beaches and nearshore reefs. Our trout are already fat from spring feeding, and they just seem to get fatter on this last feed before their first spawn in May.

If you are stuck on shore, wade our front beaches, or hop around our fishing piers. The trout also like to run up and down are beaches this time of year feeding in the shallows.

It's the epitome of getting it while the getting is good. Especially if you don't have the bigger boats needed to consistently fish our barrier islands due to wind, etc, once the majority of these trout hang out at the islands for the summer.

As for how to catch them....when you find them, it's often just put something in the water. I've seen numerous fishermen slinging them overboard with the tried and true popping cork and shrimp setup. As for artificial/lures, I like to fish fast and furious. Most of the time you can enjoy an awesome topwater bite early in the morning, and then follow up with any plastics of your choice on a jighead. Our waters are pretty clear and salty, so consider natural colors imitating the silvers/whites/blue/green colors of our menhaden.

Go put some in the cooler!

When the trout are chompin' it's hard to beat a "mid-strolled" soft plastic. It takes full advantage of their instinct to feed "up".

If you saw the viciousness of how these trout in my last video attacked the Berkley Chop Block, and you plan to use them, make sure to apply these modifications out of the box. They are trout catching machines, but those hooks need to release!

I lost the biggest trout of my life… twice… before finally figuring this out.

4 days. Multiple blown chances. One adjustment that changed everything.

This one ended up being my personal best (for now)… but it almost didn’t happen.

May on the Gulf coast is always fishing on fire, but honestly, April could be right there….if it wasn’t for the dang wind. Every day the wind seems to be ripping, making getting to the fish very difficult , and if you get to them, boat positioning is another challenge. But that’s not all folks, because the wind affects casting and lure/bait presentation also.

To combat the wind, I start leveling the playing field beforehand by studying google maps and a good wind app, like windfinder. This allows me to identify areas protected from the wind, and to figure out how to get there with the least amount of snot lost to waves and chop.

With that said, the past few weeks we have focused on areas at the mouth of our bays and slightly “out front” into the Mississippi sound. We’ve found plenty of trout 15-20”s with some big fish( 20 plus) mixed in. Additionally in these areas the flounder are starting to show up in numbers, and of course, if there’s food, the reds will be around. Make no mistake though, like I’ve mentioned, trout move in waves, so good fish are already being caught at our barrier islands 10 miles out…and there are reports of good trout still being caught well into our bay systems. Be careful with chasing those reports. If you are just trying to get on some fish, increase your odds of catching by staying near the bulk of the population of trout, and as always find their food source first…mullet and small pogies are filling bellies.

Lures….keep a topwater available. With our perfect 70 degree water temps, the trout are full of energy and will bust a topwater over and over. If you go with a jig and plastic….don’t be afraid to fish it fast. The fish are hungry and chasing.

Help me grow this thing and spread to more fishermen by liking, following, and sharing on facebook. And subscribe on youtube where I’m categorizing all my videos into “playlist” categories for you to utilize year in and year out to help you find the fish. Thank you!
